Victorious Living through Jesus by the Spirit

Bible Passage: Romans 8:1–11

Summary: This passage emphasizes the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, illustrating how they are liberated from condemnation and sin through faith in Christ, enabling them to live according to God's Spirit rather than the flesh.
Application: This sermon can help Christians understand that despite their struggles with sin and past mistakes, they are not condemned. Rather, they can experience freedom and victory through the Spirit by embracing their identity in Christ and relying on Him in their daily lives.
Teaching: The teaching focus of this sermon is that believers are no longer under condemnation and are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live in accordance with God's will, leading to a life marked by victory over sin.
How this passage could point to Christ: In this passage, Christ fulfills the law's requirements by being the sacrifice for sin, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, He enables believers to conform to His image, demonstrating the centrality of Christ in God's redemptive plan.
Big Idea: The big idea communicates that through Christ, we are empowered to overcome sin and experience victory in our daily lives as we live by the Spirit.
Recommended Study: As you prepare your sermon, consider exploring the Greek terms related to 'flesh' and 'Spirit' in Romans 8, which can provide depth to your understanding of the struggle between sin and the Spirit. Look into the different interpretations regarding verse 1's phrase about no condemnation in Christ, as well as historical theological perspectives from your Logos library that may offer insights on how the early church understood victory in Christ.

1. No Condemnation for Sin

2. Being made one with Jesus
Romans 8:1
Whenever we see therefore, it is a call to look back. Paul is referring to what he said in Romans 7:25 “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”
The freedom we have has been given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. There is no condemnation. Grace writes an unconditional guarantee. Pay close attention to how it says “IN Christ Jesus.” We are now one with Him. Through his sacrifice we are now one in faith and protected from the wrath of God.

1. A higher and greater law through the spirit.

2. God did what the law couldn’t do through Jesus
3. Totally condemning sin and allowing life through the Spirit.
Romans 8:2-4
It is the perfect union with Jesus that allows salvation and begins the path to victory. Imagine a coin falling through the air. Gravity will have that coin fall no matter what. It;s in its nature. But then you firmly grasp the coin and lift it high. If you were to let go, gravity would still have it fall, but that hand will not relinquish it. That is Jesus holding us and allowing us to live IN Him.
Now for the way in which this happens, to be explained. The law failed and could not save us due to our nature to sin. So God sent his son to live as fully human, facing the same temptations and same fallen world as us, but He lived perfectly. This totally condemns sin in the flesh and shows that only jesus can provide love.
So now the miracle of life can be reproduced IN us, not BY us, through the spirit of life that is given by God.

1. How are you choosing to live every day?

2. Where do you find your motivation?
Romans 8:5-8
These verses truly show the different lifestyles that can be chosen to live. This is the difference in the saved and the unsaved. Is your motivation in Christ? Motivation found in pleasing the Lord? Or is it found in pleasing yourself? How often do you think about these things?
Those apart from God are totally depraved and cannot please God. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Since Adam and eve this world is wicked and fallen. Through the days of Noah to Abraham to Isaac to Moses to David to the prophets… all show the fallenness of man. And how we are incapable of pleasing the Lord to our sin. BUT CHRIST!

1. Your path is different. You are chosen.

2. Despite the fallenness, the spirit of life can be found thanks to righteousness which we have through Jesus
Romans 8:9-11
Since we are chosen, we must surrender! The flesh is dead to sin but life is found thanks to God through Jesus given to us by the Spirit. Jesus is the example and fulfilled what we could not. Took our place through His sacrifice so that now, thanks to Him, when the Father looks upon us, he sees the righteousness of jesus. Now our victory can be won as we stand in Christ jesus through the Holy Spirit. These mortal bodies, these broken bones, they now offer life and they now have power.

Conclusion: The spirit can now impart victory over our sins through Jesus’s redeeming love.

Recap everything you have discussed and affirm the path to victory. how Jesus has substituted Himself in our place to allow us to have life, now offering us that gracious gift through love. and with the power of the Holy Spirit, we are now able to proclaim the name of Christ to all and make Him known.
