Hebrews 11:8–16 NASB95
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. 13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

Abraham didn’t deserve God’s favor.

From Genesis 11 we find out:
Abraham (Abram) was born to Tarah
His wife was Sarai (she was barren)
He was born and raised in Ur of the Chaldeans.
Nothing is said about his character, or his faith, nothing at all to indicate why God chose him.
Genesis 12:1–3 NASB95
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
Abraham’s response:
Genesis 12:4–5 NASB95
4 So Abram went forth as the Lord had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, and the persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan; thus they came to the land of Canaan.
Land of Canaan and the Promised land are the same thing.
God used Abrahams Father to plant the seed.
Genesis 11:31 NASB95
31 Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.
What are the chances that the Land which Abraham’s earthly father wanted to settle in was the same land that Abraham’s heavenly Father wanted him to settle in?
The Land:
Genesis 12:6–7 NASB95
6 Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.
He goes to Egypt because of famine:
Lies that Sarah is his sister: Gets rich and goes back to Canaan.
Abraham and Lot’s Herdsmen got to fussing: So they split.
Abraham gave Lot the choice of land.
Genesis 13:12 NASB95
12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom.
Genesis 13:14–17 NASB95
14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15 for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. 16 “I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. 17 “Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you.”
Chapter 15 God promises Abraham a son.
Chapter 16 Sarai gives Hagar to Abraham.
Genesis 17:1–2 NASB95
1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless. 2 “I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
Gives him the covenant of Circumcision
Abraham asked God to establish His covenant through Ishmael.
Genesis 17:19 NASB95
19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
Genesis 18:1–3 NASB95
1 Now the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth, 3 and said, “My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, please do not pass Your servant by.
They/He
They said that this time next year Sarah would have a son.
Sarah heard it and laughed.
The Lord asked Abraham why Sarah laughed.
(We don’t have recorded a response from Abraham.)
Genesis 18:15 NASB95
15 Sarah denied it however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
Before Issac was born, Abraham pulled the old “She’s my sister” trick again to a Guy named Abimelech.
By Faith: obeyed God
Lived as an alien
By Faith Sarah received the ability to conceive.
Died without receiving the promises: But saw them and welcomed them from a distance.
Examine their Great Faith
Did nothing to deserve it.
Did all that God Commanded them (but not without complications)
Worshiped God, even though they sometimes
took matters into their own hands
had doubts
Lied to God and others.
All ahead:
Hebrews 11:15–16 NASB95
15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
Philippians 3:13–14 NASB95
13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Isaiah 43:18–19 NASB95
18 “Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past. 19 “Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert.
