Bible Passage: Romans 2:14-15, 2 Corinthians 3:1-6
Summary: These passages explore the concept of God's law being inscribed on the hearts of humanity through creation and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in the new birth, revealing our innate understanding of right and wrong and the incapability or capability to adhere to God’s standards.
God’s moral law is intrinsic to our being. The New Birth empowers Christians to live righteously and offer a compassionate response to those struggling with sin as they come to realize God’s moral standards are not just external but are intended to resonate with their inner convictions.
God's law is not merely a set of external rules but is deeply embedded within us, from creation through to the new birth. It highlights the role of the Holy Spirit in writing God's law on our hearts and enables us to live according to His will.
Christ fulfills the law and prophets, showing how through Him, the law is perfectly embodied. His work in believers through the Holy Spirit makes the law alive and active in us, fulfilling the prophecy of a new covenant where God's laws are internalized.
True transformation comes from recognizing that God's law is not just something we follow externally but is written on our hearts through creation and renewed by the Holy Spirit, urging us to live authentically for Him.
1. Inbuilt Moral Awareness
1. Inbuilt Moral Awareness
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them
Even those without direct knowledge of God's law, like the Gentiles, inherently understand moral principles because God's law is written on our hearts from creation. This intrinsic moral compass reveals the universality of God's standards.
2. Internal Transformation Evident
2. Internal Transformation Evident
Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you? You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
Paul stresses the inner transformation believers experience through the Spirit, who writes God's law directly on our hearts—transforming us into living letters of Christ. This highlights the shift from external adherence to internal transformation, emphasizing authenticity in the Christian life.
These verses show us that God's internal work empowers us to be genuine examples of His love and righteousness, living testimonies of His grace.
3. Inadequate Yet Empowered
3. Inadequate Yet Empowered
Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
We see Paul’s assurance in the Holy Spirit's power to enable us to be ministers of the new covenant, showcasing the sufficiency that comes from God and not from human capability. This underscores the concept that true transformation and ability to uphold God's law come not from ourselves but through His Spirit.
Precious believer, we need to rely on the Spirit's enabling power to fulfill God's purposes and embody His law in our daily lives.
Precious unbeliever, You see Gods law written on your heart from creation, you are determined to reform your life, but you know deep down you cannot. I’ve been where you are at.
What must I do? first of all you must admit your need, Come to God saying ,”I am a sinner. I can’t even live up to my own moral standards. Open your heart and life to him, and He will send the Holy spirit to come and live within you. He will write His laws upon your hearts and minds and empower you to live in a way you could not live before.
holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.
This is the last great deception. People trusting in their own goodness, while denying the cross and the God who put it there.
