Key Scripture:
1 Corinthians 10:13 MEV
No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, and He will not permit you to be tempted above what you can endure, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Introduction: The Fishing Lure (3-4 min)
(Hold up a fishing lure)
"Have you ever been fishing? If you have, you know the key to catching a fish is using the right lure. A good lure is designed to do one thing—trick the fish. It’s shiny, moves like real bait, and looks like an easy meal. But what the fish doesn’t see is the hidden hook. The moment it bites down, it’s trapped."
"Temptation works the same way. It looks good. It feels like something we want. But hidden beneath the surface is a trap. The enemy knows exactly what kind of bait will catch us, and if we’re not careful, we’ll end up hooked—stuck in sin, regret, and consequences we never intended. But here’s the good news: God gives us a way out. Today, we will talk about recognizing temptation, avoiding the hook, and walking in freedom."

1. Recognizing the Source of Temptation

(Hold up the lure again) "This lure isn’t just random—it’s designed to look like what the fish naturally wants. Temptation works the same way. It’s crafted to look appealing, based on our own weaknesses."

Three Main Sources of Temptation:

James 1:13–15 MEV
Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil; neither does He tempt anyone. But each man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then, when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin; and when sin is finished, it brings forth death.
1 John 2:16 MEV
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father, but is of the world.
The World – The culture around us, telling us to chase success, pleasure, or control.
The Flesh – Our own desires and struggles, like addiction, anger, or pride.
The Enemy (Satan) – He’s the master fisherman, baiting the hook with lies.
Example: Eve in the Garden
Genesis 3:1-6 – The fruit looked good but came with a price.
Genesis 3:1–6 MEV
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit from the trees of the garden; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You will not eat of it, nor will you touch it, or else you will die.’ ” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasing to the eyes and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
Question to Consider: What kind of bait does the enemy use in your life?

2. God’s Promise of a Way Out

"A smart fish learns to recognize a lure and avoid it. As believers, we can learn to spot temptation and take the escape route God gives us before we get hooked."
1 Corinthians 10:13 – "No temptation has overtaken you… but God provides a way out."
1 Corinthians 10:13 MEV
No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, and He will not permit you to be tempted above what you can endure, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Example: Joseph (Genesis 39:7-12) – When faced with temptation, he didn’t flirt with it—he ran!
Genesis 39:7–12 MEV
After a time, his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “My master does not concern himself with anything concerning me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my charge. There is none greater in this house than I. He has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” She spoke to Joseph every day, but he did not listen to her about lying with her or being with her. But it happened one day that Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was there. She caught him by his clothing, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his clothing in her hand and fled and got outside.
Practical Escape Routes:
Identify triggers.
Set boundaries (accountability, removing temptations).
Call on God in the moment.
Illustration: Imagine a fish that swims right up to the lure, studies it, then says, “Nah, not today.” That’s what we need to do with temptation!

3. Replacing Lies with Truth

"The devil’s bait is full of lies. He wants us to believe that sin will satisfy us, that no one will know, or that we can handle it. But God’s Word exposes the truth."
Satan’s Tactic: "Did God really say…?"
Genesis 3:1 MEV
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?”
Jesus’ Response: He fought temptation with Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11).
Matthew 4:1–11 MEV
Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. And He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, and then He was hungry. And the tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones be turned into bread.” But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, and set Him on the highest point of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning you,’ and ‘In their hands they shall lift you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur, and said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get away from here, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left Him, and immediately angels came and ministered to Him.
Common Lies vs. Biblical Truth:
Lie: "I can’t resist." → Truth: "I can do all things through Christ" (Philippians 4:13).
Philippians 4:13 MEV
I can do all things because of Christ who strengthens me.
Lie: "God is holding out on me." → Truth: "No good thing does He withhold" (Psalm 84:11).
Psalm 84:11 MEV
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give favor and glory, for no good thing will He withhold from the one who walks uprightly.
(Hold up the lure one last time) "The difference between taking the bait and swimming free is knowing the truth. The more we fill our minds with God’s Word, the easier it is to see through the enemy’s tricks."

4. Walking in Victory

"Even if we’ve taken the bait before, we don’t have to stay hooked. Through Christ, we can walk in victory."
The Power of the Holy Spirit"Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16)
Galatians 5:16 MEV
I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
The Strength of Community"Confess your sins to one another… that you may be healed." (James 5:16)
James 5:16 MEV
Confess your faults to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much.
Daily Renewal"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12:2)
Romans 12:2 MEV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Illustration: Fishermen don’t just cast a lure once—they keep trying, switching lures if needed. The enemy doesn’t stop tempting us, but if we stay close to God, we’ll recognize the bait and avoid the hook every time.

Closing Challenge: Don’t Take the Bait

(Place the lure down) "Just like a fish doesn’t realize the danger until it’s too late, temptation can take us further than we ever intended. But the good news is, through Christ, we don’t have to take the bait. God gives us the wisdom and strength to swim away before we get caught."
Reflection Questions:
What’s the bait the enemy keeps using in your life?
Are you taking the escape route God provides?
Who can you ask for accountability?
Call to Action:
Invite those struggling with temptation to come forward for prayer.
Challenge everyone to memorize 1 Corinthians 10:13 and rely on God’s escape route.
1 Corinthians 10:13 MEV
No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, and He will not permit you to be tempted above what you can endure, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
