Intro

Have you ever been expected to know something you weren’t taught
Or maybe been expected to know what your parents expected but they never told you
That’s hard right
Communication is important and its more than just actions it words as well
Read Romans 10:5-21
Romans 10:5–21 ESV
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. 18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” 19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry.” 20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, “I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.” 21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Righteousness Vs. Righteousness

Read Romans 10:5-8
Romans 10:5–8 ESV
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);
Paul here is comparing two forms of righteousness
Why is he doing this well we have to go back to Verse 4
Romans 10:4 ESV
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Christ has changed what righteousness is
It is not and paul has already made the case it never was by our own adherence to the law
It has always been by faith
Remember Paul is in the midst of making the case that salvation is not a work that we perform in our own lives rather its the spirit of God in us calling us to himself
We respond to that compelling call by faith
So Paul is laying out the case again about how we dont save ourselves by our works of adherence to the law
He is comparing Righteous to Roghteousness
Righteousness that comes from the law vs. Righteousness that comes from faith
He starts with the reminder of what moses says in Leveticius that the righteousness based on the law holds the person to the whole law
If your righteousness comes through the law then you are bound to it
You shall live by it
But Romans 3:23 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” we can do that
Then Romans 8:3 “3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,”
We have cheapened the law because we have broken it so that righteousness is dead
Then Romans 10:4 “4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
Christ has officially put and end to righteousness that comes through the Law
So he reminds us what Righteousness based on faith says
As if it has come alive and speaks to us its sets two questions before us
Who will ascend to heaven
Who wil go up and get him so that we may attain slavation
Who will descend into the abyss
Who will go and search the depths of the abyss in order to find Christ and bring him near to us
It is unneccessary for us to try to and search in heaven for Christ or in the depths of the abyss because Christ is near to us
In his death and ressurection Christ is near and attainable to us through the gospel message
This is what the righteousness based on faith says
That Christ lived died and was ressurected so that we may have salavtion and righteousness through him
This is truth that should be near to us on our mouths and in our hearts
Salvation is attainable and it near and accessible because it isnt dependent on the law rather on our faith
So what do we do with this???

The pattern of salvation

Read Romans 10:9-13
Romans 10:9–13 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
What do we do with the nearness of Jesus of the slavation that comes through faith
We confess and believe
This gospel message is near and attainable to us we must just confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that God has won our salvation when he raised Jesus from the dead
This is the faith that saves us
A faith that is on our mouths confessing his death and ressurection
A faith that we believe in our hearts that Christ has been raised form the dead defeating death once and for all
Giving us a righteousness that doesnt come from what we do but comes from what he has done on our behalf
He has been given as a propitiation for us
Paul makes this case clear it is with our hearts that we believe
The belief is what justifies us in the sight of God
This belief in Christ’s atoning work on the cross is very thing that makes us right in God’s sight
No work we do
No adherence to the law
Just belief in your heart
The mouth confesses and is saved
The mouth responds to the action in the heart
Once the belief takes root the mouth will proclaim will confess
Again it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man rather what comes out
Matthew 15:11 “11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.””
This is the pattern of salvation for all period
Jew and Greek alike
God is the same God for all
Saving all those who call on him
Who believe in theor heart
who confess with their mouths
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
Christ is near attainable to all you are not farther away becuase you have this sin or that sin in your life
You are not unworthy to call on him no matter what you have done

How do we know who to call on

Read Romans 10:14-21
Romans 10:14–21 ESV
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed?
Such a beautiful reminder from paul that all who call on the name of the lord will be saved
This gives us such confidence but paul asks an important question
How will they call upon the name of the lord if they dont know him
How will they call on him who they have not believed? How will they believe in whom they have not heard of? and how will they hear about him if no one says anythign
God works out his salvation through people proclaiming his word
Our faith is not one that we just believe and sit quietly rather we confess with our mouth and we proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ
We do this by going and sending
We can be the one to proclaim the word and we can also be the ones to send them
Both of these are responsibilites of the believer
Paul does remind us that there is no guarentee that just because we proclaim they will hear
Romans 10:16 “But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?””
They have not all obeyed the gospel
Not everyone responds to the word
Paul continues down this line of thinking
Romans 10:17 ESV
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:18 ESV
But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”
But havent they all heard Paul quotes Psalm 19:4 “Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,”
The psalmist is reminding us just as Paul his his word goes everywhere.
In Roman’s 1 Paul says God has made himself plain to all of us
Jesus says if the people dont declare his truth then the rocks themselves will cry out
Other parts of Psalms are repleat with truth that God will make himself known
But this doesn’t absolve us from the responsibility of proclaiming his word
But even the nation of Isreal who should be the easiest to convince the nation that was led out Egypt by a pillar of fire at night
The nation of Isreal that benefitted from miraculous military victories
The nation that crossed the Red Sea on dry land
They should know and follow and believe
Yet look what Moses and Isaiah say about that nation
So since some will not believe should we give up does God give up on them no
Romans 10:21 ESV
But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”
god will continue to hold out his hand in grace for his people
We to should no grow weary of proclaiming his word even to a disobedient and contrary people
