The Effect Of Word’s On Other’s
Gen: 1
We started a series this month looking at the POWER OF WORDS.
Words, anyway that you look at it are powerful. You might ask why? Why are words so powerful?
It’s because it’s the way God operates and He has placed it within us.
Look we me at the first chapter of Genesis and see how many times God uses words.
Genesis 1:1–2:3 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. 6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 So the evening and the morning were the third day. 14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. 20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. 24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
So we see here the importance of words. That God created everything that we see through words, and this week I want us to see the effect of words on other people.
Proverbs 15:1–2 (NKJV) 1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
Look with me at the first part of this verse.
Proverbs 15:1 (NLT) 1 A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.
Proverbs 15:1 (TPT) 1 Respond gently when you are confronted and you’ll defuse the rage of another. Responding with sharp, cutting words will only make it worse. Don’t you know that being angry can ruin the testimony of even the wisest of men?
Words have power—Let’s use them wisely!
Joke: A woman went to her pastor and said, "Pastor, I have a habit of saying exactly what’s on my mind. At least I’m honest!"
The pastor smiled and replied, "Well, honesty is good, but remember, a porcupine is honest too… and nobody wants to hug one!”
Joke: A man once told his wife, "You know, they say words can either build up or tear down."
She nodded and replied, "That’s true! And judging by your last comment… you just remodeled the couch into your new bed!”
Watch those words—they have consequences!
Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Look at 3 things we can do, so that our words build up others.
Let your speech always be with grace.
Just as we have received grace from God, we should extend it to others, in our words, in our speech to them.
Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV) 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
2. Seasoned with salt: Colossians 4:6
Salt preserves, enhances, and heals, our words should do the same.
Think how a little salt can transform food, so our grace filled words can change someone's heart.
3. That you may know how you ought to answer each one. Col. 4:6
Having wisdom to know how to answer in a giving situation, is so important.
Proverbs 15:1 (NKJV) 1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
Dale Carnegie shares this story in How to Win Friends and Influence People to illustrate the power of encouragement and appreciation in leadership.
Charles Schwab was one of Andrew Carnegie’s top executives in the steel industry. At a time when a salary of $50,000 a year was considered extremely high, Schwab was earning $1 million annually—a staggering sum. When asked why Andrew Carnegie was willing to pay him so much, Schwab explained that it wasn’t because of his technical knowledge of steel production. Instead, he attributed his success to his ability to work with people.
Schwab had a unique talent: he made people feel important. Instead of criticizing or commanding his employees, he inspired them with praise, encouragement, and appreciation. He believed that the way to motivate people was not through fear or reprimand but through recognizing their strengths and making them feel valued.
Church Family, Our words have the power to build up or tear down. As believers, our speech should reflect the grace of Christ and be "seasoned with salt," bringing wisdom, encouragement, and truth to those around us.
Remember:
Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Mother Teresa said, Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."
Proverbs 25:11 (NKJV) 11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.
Church Family, ”Words are free. It’s how you use them that may cost you.”
I heard this one the other day,
"The tongue has no bones, but it is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words." – Unknown
This week I want to challenge you from Col 4:6, to let your words be:
Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) Let your speech always be with grace…
2. Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) seasoned with salt,
3. Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
This is wisdom from the word of God.
