What is the Gospel?
Defined in the Word
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
What is the Gospel?
It’s the power of God for salvation
It’s how God saves
But that tells how God uses the Gospel but not really what the Gospel is…
Let’s take it one piece at a time and hopefully by the end we’ll have a clearer understanding of what the Gospel is and what it shows us about God
Pray.
Lesson
Lesson
So the Gospel is “the power of God to save”
What’s the first question we should ask?
Save from what?
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
What do we need to be saved from?
God’s perfect and just wrath (His anger)
Why is He angry?
Unrighteousness
We see the truth (God is in charge) but we suppress it
We reject God, we don't want Him
We want to be our own God
We don’t love and trust the good God even though He created us and gives us life
We choose to worship created things instead of the Creator
for it is written,
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall confess to God.”
No one in Hell can say to God, “you are not just or good or right”
Everyone in Heaven will praise Him as Holy forever
God is the good king of everything, and in our sin we rejected Him.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What does this verse teach us about sin?
Sinners deserve to be punished.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
What does this verse teach us about sin?
Sin makes us unworthy to be with God
We aren’t good enough
We “fall short” (arrow and target)
There’s a standard and we don’t meet it
Sin separates us from God because we aren’t good enough.
Sin puts us under God’s holy judgement.
Our problem has two sides:
We have sin and deserve to be punished
We lack the righteousness needed to be accepted
Our problem is we have what we shouldn’t and don’t have what we should
That’s what makes Jesus so precious!
And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,
God sent His son to live a life of perfect trust and obedience in the Father
Jesus spent 33 years on this earth and never had one evil thought, one false motive, one slip up of impatience, nothing!
Jesus lived a completely sinless life
He did not “fall short of the glory of God”
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
God sent His Son to die for the punishment my sin deserves
I earned Hell fair and square but Jesus experienced Hell for me on a cross
If “the wages of sin is death” Jesus experience the wages of Sin
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The “great exchange” of the Gospel
“Jesus in my place”
Jesus takes the punishment for my sin and gives me the reward for His obedience
Christ has Purchased salvation for His people with His life.
“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
This is a gift that must be received, not something we can buy or earn
How is it received?
Through Faith
What is Faith?
“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call upon him while he is near;
let the wicked forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
You see a call to faith in these verses
Repent and believe = Faith
But what does that look like?
If you see the horror and hopelessness of your sinful state, turn from your rejection of God to trust in Jesus (His work is finished)
Don’t turn from sin to your best attempt to “be righteous”
Turn from sin to trust in Christ’s righteousness on your behalf
Christ sacrifice for your sin
Salvation is all God’s grace, received only through faith.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Pray.
