Gen. 19
Gen. 19
This is a story about a morally bankrupted Caananite civilization.
It is a story about Gods judgement of a society that is completely divorced of reverence of God.
And also about Lots family we will see it was difficult to get them out of Sodom. But even more difficult to get Sodom out of them.
Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”
We see here that Lot was hospitable and generous. Also he was rightoues.
Lot was called rightoues Lot because he listen to God. It had nothing to do with his actions but the fact that he listen to God he was spared and exercised faith.
and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked
(for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)—
But we also see Lot at the entrance of the city. He was at the gateway of Sodom. Only judges where at the city gates. Lot was a judge this is where legal and business transactions were finalized.
As a judge Lot sought to screen out the wickedness of the people living in Sodom and give advice on good living.
He knew truth and justice, righteousness and evil. He was a rightoues man.
But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.
And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”
These angels who they thought where men. Where attractive in there minds.
They wanted homosexual relations with these angels who they thought were men.
So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him,
and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly!
Remember Lot is a judge so he is putting on his judicial hat on. “Lets negotiate.”
See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
This is where the vileness or perversity of the people and Lots hypocrisy meet.
When you are living in hypocrisy you are void of the power thats needed to uphold power things. Which is being Spirit filled and allowing God to lead and strengthen you.
The men’s vileness was matched, surprisingly, by Lot’s hypocrisy, for he was willing to give them his virgin daughters (19:8). To protect one’s guests was part of hospitality, but this was going too far! Lot’s pleas for righteousness (v. 7) were now wasted as the Sodomites saw a different side of their judge
Lot says take my daughter but he sweetens the pot or trying to make the offer more lucrative by speaking about there sexual innocence.
we can only conclude that Lot jeopardized the lives of his daughters, even any hope for a heritage—all for the sake of the strangers.
By a bizarre twist, however, it is his daughters who finally take advantage of Lot, sexually abusing their father by which he gains male heirs after all (vv. 36–38).
“That Lot sanctions the rape of his daughters indicates a moral compass gone awry; he places hospitality above the protection of his own children. It is difficult to conceive of such a custom that would put a guest’s well-being over family.”
And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.
But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.
Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place!
For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
Lot was more then likely hypocritical, because his words weren’t taken seriously. Thats what happens when you live a life of hypocrisy everything you say whether truthful or not won’t be taken seriously.
When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.”
And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.
So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
“then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house.
And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords!
Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die.
See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”
And he said to him, “See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken.
Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Zoar- means little or insignificant. In order for one to be saved this is how we should come to God little or insignificant.
As soon as we think we are bigger then who we are thats when challenges arise.
The sin of sodom and Gomorrah happened at night but the judgment happen in the day.
The culprits sinned in the cover of night, but their punishment is displayed in the light of day
For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
He’s referring to uncovering of hypocrisy.
Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness.
Eventually the inward part will be revealed.
They will also be seen as graves full of corruption.
