Welcome back.
I hope all has had a great week.
We are continuing our look into the Names of God and how they reveal His nature and character.
But first.....
How have you seen God work and move in your life and around you this week?

Covered

What do you use to make sure family and yourself is taken care of in emergencies?
Insurance is a major business.
Americans spent and estimated 4.9 trillion on healthcare
Average cost for insurance was $8,951 for singe coverage and $25,572 for family
That is just health care
There is also auto, home/renters/ life insurance.
We have accident, legal, title, pet, earthquake, flood, funeral insurance’
That is a lot -I am not telling you to get rid of any of it, hopefully everyone is covered
But in the times of Abraham and Moses there was no insurance but there was assurance.
That is what I want to talk about today
God reveals yet another picture of His character.
Let's pray
Our Banner
Let me set this up:
Israel had just been freed form Egypt
They have just begun their journey
God has provided bread (manna) and water from a rock
Exodus 17:8–10 ESV
8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Amalek were descendants of Esau
These were not good people, they would harass Israel
This is the first battle for the promised land
Exodus 17:11–13 ESV
11 Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
Some say this was Moses leading the battle and when his hands went up it was to move forward and when they drop they were to retreat.
But they couldn't see him.
Most believe this was Moses praying for God’s power to win the battle
Lifted hands is a common picture of worship, prayer, and surrender
It also showed it was not the strength of Moses that would get the Israelites through.
It was God’s strength alone.
Exodus 17:14–15 ESV
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner,
Our banner - Jehovah - Nissi
Exodus 17:15 ESV
15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner,
We all face a wilderness and battles that are to great for us to imagine winning.
So what does the Lord is our Banner mean for us today?
Lord is Our Banner
First the significance of a banner
In ancient times Banners-
Identified the people and who led them
Rallying point to gather or to return
Communicated the direction to go and announced victories
Symbolized the ideals of the people
Four things for us today to embrace the Lord as our banner
God as your banner means - His purpose stands firm
It’s a rallying point a point of focus
It is easy to lose focus in a battle , feel lost
We fix our eyes on Him to stay centered on His purpose - Know Him Make/ Him Known
Hebrews 12:2 ESV
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
God as your banner means - He is with you through everything
Moses kept his arms up with help in prayer and worship to remind God was with them
Matthew 28:20 ESV
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
God as your banner means - His provision sustains you
Philippians 4:19 ESV
19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
We don’t know what we need, but in those moments Jehovah Nissi (banner) is Jehovah Jireh (provider)
God as your banner means - His protection brings victory
John 16:33 ESV
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
We will face battles. It is a guarantee, but He has won so we have won.

My Banner

Faith upholds a Christian under all trials, by assuring him that every painful dispensation is under the direction of his Lord; that chastisements are a token of His love; that the season, measure, and continuance of his sufferings, are appointed by Infinite Wisdom, and designed to work for his everlasting good; and that grace and strength shall be afforded him, according to his need. - John Newton
Romans 8:31 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Next week - Jehovah- Shalom Judges 6:22-24
Let’s pray
