Introduction: Friends, last week we saw how the people of Israel complained and got angry at the Lord because they did not trust the Lord.
The Lord punished them for their sin so that they would wander in the wilderness for 40 years. They would die and not see the Promised Land. Their children would go into the promised land instead.
Now, friends, today we’re going to see an entirely different response from this new generation.
Importantly, friends, God has chosen a new leader of the Israelites, Joshua, to whom God promised that He would be with. Notice, friends, how Joshua addresses the people to tell them what God wants them to do.
Content and Explanation:
Joshua 3:9 - Joshua is about to tell the people that God wants them to cross the Jordan River, which is impossible to cross when it’s rushing over its banks!
Joshua 3:10 God promises that He’s going to work in such a way that the people will know that the Lord is with them.
Joshua 3:11-13 Just like God demonstrated His faithfulness when He parted the Red Sea, so He demonstrates His faithfulness here - He has not changed and can be trusted; the people obey instead of complaining and getting angry (heart change
Application:
Galatians 5:22–23 Just like God promised His presence with the Israelites, so He has promised His presence with those who have believed on Jesus to save them by giving His Holy Spirit.
No matter the challenge, the Holy Spirit can help you to live to please the Lord.
Though we might not be challenged to cross a raging river, the Lord has given us things to do: be kind to others, do our homework, listen to our teacher, obey our parents.
If you haven’t done these things, indicates you’re a sinner who needs Jesus to save you to change you.
If you have believed on Jesus, He can forgive you of disobeying, and the Holy Spirit can empower you to obey.
