SO what do you need to know ? Israel had just gotten its very first King upon the wish of the people of Israel. Before Kingship in Israel the nation was ran by what is called a Kritocracy which is a system ran by biblical judges who would make military decisions as well. The people of Israel had seen other nations being ran my monarchy and began to want to conform to those patterns and move away from the biblical judges to a kingship.
The big issue with this situation was that the people of Israel were in objection to Gods authority because it was God who sent them the one leader to be Judge and bring rule over them and they have now said that wasn’t good enough and we want a king to judge us.
Samuel was a priest , prophet and Israels last Judge and he pleaded with the elders of Israel that a kingship was a bad idea and that it would not go well for them.
So Israel elected a man name Saul and he became King and one day they were instructed to take over a city and the Lord had instructed them to take nothing , no sheep, no clothes, nothing from this place and the king and his men ended up taking back with them some of the best oxen and sheep and the Lord rejected king Saul for his disobedience. Which brings me to 1 Samuel 16: 1-
Verse 1, God had already determined that the future of Israel would be in the hands of a better man, David. Saul disobeyed Gods direct orders but also tried to offer sacrifices after he knew what he had done and the Lord did not except it because the weren’t supposed to take any oxen, sheep ect.
Verse 2, Samuel expressed a fear of Saul. HE had a very different relationship with Saul unitl he delivered the word from the Lord that declared his rejection against him, I can understand the fear of what God was asking Samuel to do. And here we see it the Lord PROVIDES Samuel with a way! GOD knew what needed to happen and he protected Samuel and Samuel trusted God.
Verse 3, sometimes God doesn’t always provide us with the next step but only the one needed at the moment. How often do we doubt God because we cant see the entire picture. Obey the instructions we have now, and God will reveal to you what is needed later.
Verse 6, Samuel saw Jesse’s oldest son Eliab and immediately thought it was him according to his appearance
Verse 7, we see the Lord revealing some of his character and what he judges by and its the inward the heart.
Verse 13, IN this story we see how God directed Samuel steps and gave him step by step directions on what to do, he only revealed how he was to choose the next King when he was ready. God doesn’t always gives us all the answers or directions to a destination. WE see Samuel move in obedience and God slowly revealed his plan to him as he a obeyed. SO David the youngest of the sons was chosen likely the smallest in stature and well see what God does with this ordinary young man.
