We have been recently looking at God’s Plan of Salvation. There is no topic more important than this. Up to this point we have covered the necessity of studying God’s word (Romans 10:17), the difference between and requirement of both belief and faith (Hebrews 11:6), how vital repentance is in this process (Acts 17:30), and why Jesus wants us to count the cost of discipleship (Luke 14:25-35). That brings us to today, wherein we are going to be focusing “Confessing Jesus.” There are two passages that stand out on this particular topic.
Matthew 10:32–33 NKJV
32 Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
Jesus is clearly demonstrating the importance of confessing him before me. Someone might ask, why is it so important for a person to tell others their acknowledgement of Jesus as the Christ? It is very simple, if we are not willing to tell others that Jesus is the Christ we cannot be a Christian.
When Jesus came to earth and became flesh (John 1:14), he purpose was two-fold.
First, he was to live a perfect life so as to be the perfect sacrifice for all of humanities sins. This he accomplished as the Hebrew writer points out in Hebrews 4:15-5:10).
Second, Jesus came to this earth to prove he was the prophesied Messiah.
Luke 24:44 NKJV
44 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
How can we, those in need of a savior, think we can be saved if we are unwilling to confess the one and only person who can save us. Remember what Peter said in Acts 4:12.
Acts 4:12 NKJV
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
We cannot be saved without confessing the very name of the only one who can save us, and proudly declare to all that will listen that be believe Jesus is the Christ. Now this is proven even more profoundly in Paul’s inspired letter to the church in Rome. There he wrote in Romans 10:9
Romans 10:9 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Again it does get more clear than this right here.
If we, with a true heart, study God’s saving word, we will be believe not only that God exists, but that he loves us and wants us to spend an eternity with him.
And if we put our full faith or trust in God, turn from everything that could keep us from doing so, and are willing to make that great confession that we are proud to proclaim to everyone and anyone that will listen that Jesus is the Christ, our Christ, then we are at the point where our sins have the opportunity to be “washed away.”
It is that last step of trusting in “God’s Plan of Salvation” that we will talk about in our next lesson concerning “baptism” and its role in our salvation.
