And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
The Dead
The Dead
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Dead in trespasses and sin - Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Payable immediately death happened after Adam sinned not when he ceased bodily function this is spiritual death
We are separated from God because of sin Isaiah 59:2
but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
God is life
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Prince of the power of the air - Satan We choose to follow him
Sons of disobedience - mankind
Passions of the flesh/desires of the body and mind - Do whatever feels Good
Children of wrath - The dead who follow Satan go where satan goes and will willingly follow him all the way to Hell
The wrath of God against Satan will be applied to them as well because they follow him to his place of punishment
The Mercy of God
The Mercy of God
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Rich in mercy/ by grace you have been saved
mercy - witholding punishment that is deserved
Grace - giving a blessing that is not deserved
Why would God save us?
Because of his great love for us
When did God save us?
Even when we were dead or as Romans 5:8
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
How did God save us?
Made us alive together with Christ
we were born again by being grafted into the source of life
our first birth he breathed into us the breath of life
in the second birth he grafts us into life
Alive with Christ
Alive with Christ
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
The result of saving us
seated us with Him in heaven - eternal life in the presence of a loving God
Purpose of saving us
Salvation is not an end unto itself its not the goal
God wants to show the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness to us
It’s for His glory
The power of salvation
not of works we are not the source the power or the strength of salvation
It is a gift of God - God does the saving and he does the keeping
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The response to salvation
created in Christ Jesus for Good works
We recripocate the love of God by doing Good works by being walking trophies of the love of God both showcasing his outpouring of love on us and by pouring out that same love on others.
