Luke 13:31 ESV
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”
Pharisees warn Jesus of Herod’s desire to kill him.
Luke 13:32 ESV
And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.
Herod had been troubled by Jesus’ miracles… he thought that when John the Baptist was beheaded he had done away with prophetic opposition.
We today think of foxes as sly or clever.… in Jesus’ day they were seen as insignificant. See
Luke 13:33 ESV
Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’
notice again the concept of the third day/resurrection in this passage.\
Notice in the 32nd verse the concept of Jesus reaching a goal.… in the 33rd verse the concept of Jesus’ death- both of which can be viewed as one and the same.
In Lukes’ economy/theology, the 33rd verse with Jesus’ death , it marks the completion of Jesus’ mission.
Luke 13:34 ESV
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
Luke 13:35 ESV
Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
Note in the 34-35th verses, Jesus is referencing the triumphal entry… which is the fulfilment of prophecy in Psalm 118.26
Psalm 118:26 ESV
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.

The Mission

Herod was concerned. see Luke 9.7-9
Luke 9:7–9 ESV
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.

The Mission of Herod

Herod wondered if John the Baptist has come back to life. It so intrigued him, that at one point he said he wanted to Meet Jesus so he could see Jesus perform a miracle. But now, it would appear that Herod’s heart was hardened, and he wanted nothing but to kill Jesus as he had killed John the Baptist.
Kill the opposition. That Was Herod’s Mission.
He killed John the Baptist. He wanted to kill Jesus. And in the story of Jesus’ passion, Herod plays the part of sending Jesus back to Pilate certain of improving relations with Pilate and sealing Jesus’ fate because of the Jews. His Mission was accomplished.

The Mission of Jesus

Jesus, on the other hand, had nothing to worry about. he had no fear. He was working by His Father’s calendar, not Herod’s.....
John 2:4 ESV
And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”
Think about how many times Jesus said his hour had not yet come. How many times did he say this, knowing that the accomplishment of the mission was punishment and death.
It was decreed from the beginning of time thatJesus would be crucified in Jerusalem… see 1 Peter 1.20
1 Peter 1:20 ESV
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
Infact, Herod could do nothing to stop God’s plans or Jesus’ ministry...any effort to do so would only help to fulfil the will of God… see Acts 2.23
Acts 2:23 ESV
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.Acts 3.13-18
Acts 3:13–18 ESV
The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. “And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.
Jesus crucified represented Jesus’ mission accomplished.
I think when you read this scripture as it is, you realize that Jesus is heartbroken. O Jerusalem....see Luke 13.31-35
Luke 13:31–35 ESV
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
ultimately, this is a dire passage for Jerusalem… and yet the deeper message is that there is a future for Israel. Even though the temple was destroyed, Jerusalem was sacked, and even though Jesus was crucified and buried… there is always a future for Jesus. Because He was always in the center of God’s will.
And there is a future for Israel. When they find the center of God’s will.
See Hosea 3.4-5
Hosea 3:4–5 ESV
For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods. Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.
It’s happening.
I want you to notice something in this passage we may have glossed over.… it’s found in Luke 13.32-33
Luke 13:32–33 ESV
And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’
Notice the mention of 3 days in this passage. The mention of 3 days, by Jesus… 2 times. Luke appears to be reminding his readers of the resurrection...even though in the story line it has not yet happened.
Jesus intended to continue his work indefinitely. look at the “today and tomorrow of the next verse.
“today and tomorrow” signified the present opportunity in Jesus’ ministry. (vs.33)
“today and tomorrow” represent the present opportunity in Jesus Ministry. Jesus today and tomorrow were going to involve His death.
But there’s always the third day. For Jesus. And for you, your church, your future.
Listen for a minute. What’s your mission?

Your Mission

I sat in a seminar all day on Friday. Retiring pastors… the typical question.… name, what you plan to do in retirement. various answers. Travel. work on house. bike. motorcycle. more motorcycle. But there was one common theme.… to do ministry, to serve, somewhere. Their mission wasn’t over.
Westbrook Park… God has given you marching orders. You haven’t completed them.
Preschool… outreach into a segment of the community that is messy. You’re not done.
Share Canton. Homelessness and social struggle. They continue. so will your mission.
Celebrate Recovery. There will always be hurts and hangups. They continue. so will your mission.
Night To Shine Canton. There will always be a need to celebrate with those who need celebrated and need something to celebrate. They continue, so will your mission.
Elevate Life. There will alwyas be a need to help people take a step up and out of their current situation. And while a lifeline may be thrown to several, and they are helped out, the hole that put them there will still be there… and others will fall in. They continue, so will your mission.
Food Pantry. There will always be hungry people and children, who don’t know if they will eat through the end of the month or if they will eat today. They continue, so will your mission.
Sermons will still need preached. study of God’s word will still take priority. prayer will still be needed. The need continues, so will your mission.
Matthew 26:11 ESV
For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.
Listen… even when Jesus body lay limp and lifeless in a tomb- His mission was not over. Listen again to Luke 13.32-33
Your Mission doesn’t end until every mouth is fed, every homeless person is clothed, every hangup and hurt is resolved, every child is loved, every problem is solved, every person has a personal relationship with Jesus.
Your mission isn’t over until Jesus returns to take you home.
You see, today and tomorrow are your mission. But the day after tomorrow- the third day is too. For Jesus, it was the conquering of death, the resurrection. For you, it is the conquering of sin and all of its requisite results- and that can only happen when our prayer is answered… on earth as it is in heaven.
Good job for the past 12 years. In 3 months or so I will walk out the back door and you will remain here as a church ( as dysfunctional or functional as you want to be) Get back to work. Your mission isn’t done.
