Deja vu-feeling like you have already experienced something but haven’t.

Today may be like that. We have a passage that is very similar to our text from last week. But please, don’t check out just yet.

Jesus transforms life.

The normal way for someone to follow a teacher and rabbi in those days was to petition the master to be part of their group. Then they may have to “prove” their worthiness in order to be “accepted”. This is not the path of Jesus.

The power of a simple invitation.

We can easily complicate things. I know I can. As much as I try to be simple during our times Sunday morning this is not always the case.

All Scripture points to Jesus!

We talked about this as we began our year. We must see that Jesus is the culmination of all of Scripture. In verses 44-45 we see the role the OT plays in helping us see clearly who Jesus is.

Don’t let skepticism deter.

We easily get deterred by things when we should persevere. Philip does not let the first comments of his friend get in the way of the bigger picture. Sometimes doubts and questions are necessary for growth to happen.

Jesus wants us to follow.

Jesus is searching for us as much as we are searching for Him. Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop running and just be.

Jesus is the culmination of our hopes and dreams.

This was true for the early disciples. See the words used by Nathaniel. Son of God and King of Israel are synonomous to being the Messiah. The role of the king in ancient Israel was to be a representative of God on Earth. As the king went so did the people.

Jesus is where heaven and earth combine.

This is part of what I think Jesus is saying in verses 50-51. He is using the story of Jacob from Genesis 28. The place was called Bethel, meaning “house of God”. Now the house of God is found not in a geographical location but a person.

Come and see Jesus!

Where do you need to know that Jesus sees you? Where do you need to see Jesus? What is Jesus saying to you?
