Bible Reading Week 11 (3rd Sunday)
This Week’s Theme: The Sign of His Authority
Word for the Week is Work: It is labor ordained by God as a means of fulfilment, service and praise. It is to be supplemented by rest, following the pattern of God’s creation of the world.
Memory verse: John 9:4 (NKJV) “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; [the] night is coming when no one can work.
Sermon Focus: Jesus works in a way that goes beyond our expectations
Sermon Passage: John 5:1-11,17-20
John 5:1–11 NKJV
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” 11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
John 5:17–20 NKJV
17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” 18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
WHERE DID YOU GET THAT FROM?
WHERE IS YOUR WORK?
HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE?
WHERE DID THIS MONEY COME FROM?
THESE QUESTIONS SEEM ODD UNTIL YOU KNOW THE CONTEXT.

HE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO ASK

In the same way, God asks us questions to engage us in our faith. His knowledge of our hearts isn't in question; rather, He desires our active involvement in seeking truth.

I. THE RIGHT TO ASK

John 5:6 NKJV
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

A. HIS COMPASSION

WHEN HE LOOKED HE LOVED
Mark 1:41 NKJV
41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
Mark 6:34 NKJV
34 And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.
Matthew 14:14 NKJV
14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.
ALSO DEMONSTRATED WHEN HE
In supporting the weak
In healing the sick
In comforting the bereaved
In feeding the hungry
In finding and forgiving lost sinners
In giving rest to those who are burdened or abandoned M

B. HIS COMPREHENSION

John 5:6 NKJV
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
BECAUSE HE KNEW
THERE IS A SAYING
“DON’T ASK A QUESTION YOU DON’T ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER TO!”
Jesus Christ knows every human heart Jn 2:24-25
John 2:24–25 NKJV
24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
Jesus Christ discerns evil thoughts and motives
John 5:42 NKJV
42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.
John 6:15 NKJV
15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Jesus Christ knows those whose faith is not genuine Mt 7:21-23
Matthew 7:21–23 NKJV
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Jesus Christ knows people’s situations and needs
John 1:47–49 NKJV
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
John 4:16–19 NKJV
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” 19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
John 4:28–29 NKJV
28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
WHY? DID CHRIST ASK HIM?
John 5:6 NKJV
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
In the Garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve sinned, God asked, 'Where are you?' (Genesis 3:9). Although God is omniscient and knew exactly where they were, He asked this question to provoke Adam and Eve to reflect on their relationship with Him. This teaches us that sometimes it's not about the answer, but about the intense need for us to confront our situation and seek restoration with God.
When we find ourselves in a crisis, we often question God's motives or His presence. Yet, God may ask us challenging questions to lead us toward deeper understanding. In Job, God posed questions about creation to Job not because He didn’t know the answers, but because He wanted Job to recognize the vastness of His wisdom and the importance of trust.

II. THE RIGHT TO ADVISE

John 5:7–9 NKJV
7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.
Jesus shattered the thinking the man, the people, and the Pharisees
The man: I need the angel to stir the water and I need to be the first one in.
I don’t know when the angel is coming to stir the waters
I am without help. I try but I need help.
My Malady slowed My Movement
My Affliction hindered My Attempts
My Disease hampered My Desire
My Sickness hurt My Striving
The Believers are too Busy to help
The Pharisee are Distracted
The Healed ones are
Too Blessed to Be Stressed with Me
Too Blessed to Be Bothered with Me
Too Blessed to Bear their Brothers Burdens
I DON’T UNDERSTAND IT BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS!
WHAT THE MAN AT THE POOL DID NOT KNOW THAT
THE MAN WHO WAS ASKED HIM THE QUESTION

A. HIS STATUS

John 5:10–11 NKJV
10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” 11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
LORD OVER THE MATERIAL WORLD
LORD OVER THE NATURAL WORLD
LORD OVER THE PHYSICAL WORLD
LORD OF THE SABBATH
man’s obedience to Jesus’ command, despite the Sabbath law, challenges us to prioritize Christ’s authority over societal expectations. You could suggest that believers are called to follow Jesus’ instructions, trusting in His wisdom above human traditions. This moment illustrates how our response to His healing leads to transformative living, inviting others to see Christ’s work within us.

B. HIS SAMENESS

Jesus’ assurance of His works reflecting the Father’s will, suggesting that His healing is a demonstration of God’s ongoing work in the world. You could encourage the audience to see their lives as avenues through which Jesus continues to work, drawing inspiration from His alignment with the Father’s will. This could remind us to align our lives with His purposes, becoming healers in His name.
