St Joseph likely was not conscious of being in the Messianic line. He was a laborer who was expected to listen but never speak in the synagogue. He never does speak, but he does listen when God speaks and immediately does whaat God says to do. He even does this when God messes up his marriage plans to a nice pious poor Jewish girl and then tells him to go against the Torah. He listens, wakes up, then immediately goes and takes her into his house. St Joseph pray for us!

Title

The Unlikely Davidic Father

Outline

How unlikely St Joseph is. He surely knew he was part of the Davidic line, but Bethlehem was then an unimportant village in Judea. He probably believed a Messiah would come, but he likely did not know he was the branch from which the Messiah would come. He was just an unimportant laborer, part of the class that Josephus said should listen in silence in the synagogue and never speak. And he never does speak. He does listen when God speaks and he immediately does what God says to do.
He even does it when God messed up his marriage plans and then tells him to go against his understanding of the Torah and take Mary into his house. He awoke and obeyed.
May the Lord make us Josephs with that simple but complete obedience. St. Joseph, pray for us.
