Man oh man did I struggle with this sermon
What to talk about
It was almost very overwhelming to think about Moses and what could I share with you about him
And so as we dive into Moses let me set the stage if you will
Let me give you the back drop to what is going on
6 Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7 But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them. 8 Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we. 10 “Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land.” 11 So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel.
Joseph and that generation died
But the family did what families do
they multiplied and multiplied and multiplied
So much that the land of Egypt was filled with the family of Israel or now we could almost call them the nation of Israel
Then in vs 8 we read that a King of Egypt came up who did not know Joseph
So he did not think very highly of the people of Israel
And because of that he comes up with a plan
We will make them our slaves so they won’t rebel
The nation of Israel was enslaved some 400 years so it had been over 400 years ago that Joseph was alive
The number 2 person in the county and this King didn’t know about him or wasn’t taught about him and how he helped save the county
Non the less this new King doesn’t like the nation of Israel and so he comes up with a plan to enslave them
They would build the cities of Egypt
Because there were so many of them
And so the nation of Israel was enslaved
And yet as we saw last week God had a plan
Even when it doesn’t look like
Some 400 years after Joseph had saved a country and his family
Now they are enslaved
And yet God has a plan
12 “Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.”
God sets out a plan much like He did with Joseph to bring about the salvation of his chosen people
God set a plan for Moses to be Gods mouth piece not only to Pharoah but also to the nation
You can read through the Torah the first 5 books written by Moses and see how He speaks the Words of God to the nation
He had such a unique relationship with God
So moses is born
He is born in a time when Pharaoh is killing Hebrew baby boys
There were some who feared the Lord
The midwives
15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other was named Puah; 16 and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live.
They honored the Lord by letting the baby boys live
Church I can’t help but think of how later in the story of exodus the Hebrews whine and complain that God has forgotten them
I can’t help but think of how many times I whine and complain and think where is God in all of this
God has a plan
Just like we talked about last week
We get the honor of seeing it written on paper so that because we have read it over and over, because we have watched the movie 10 commandments over and over
We know and can see that God has a plan
This is all part of God plan
And how He will use someone like the midwives who were I believe being obedient to God rather than to pharaoh let the baby boys live
And as we are in Exodus you can’t be think of one baby Boy in particular
2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.
She cared so much for her son that she hide him
Then when she couldn’t hide her infant son
She takes her chances with the nile river
She prepares for him to live in that she takes the time and effort to prepare a place for him to survive the water
This is a people who maybe as a whole as we see later in scripture who are frustrated with God because they haven’t see the salvation they expected
And yet she takes the time and effort to prepare for him to live
Now as you are reading this story of Moses there is a lot but as you read it you don’t necessarily start to think how is this guy going to bring about salvation though this kid
Who was hidden and then placed in a basket and hopefully survives
5 The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?”
She walks along the Nile and her people see a basket
They open the basket and realize it is a Baby Boy
Pharaoh’s daughter recognizes that it is one of those Hebrew babies
They were told to throw them into the Nile
This is not by happen chance that this boy is placed into a basket and survives and just happens to be picked up by the Pharaoh’s daughter
This is not a coincidence
This is all part of Gods plan
Now I know that some of you immediately go to wow that is not a very good plan why couldn’t God have done it differently
the short answer is because He is God and you are not
It requires faith to follow after God and His plan but church when we do
Awesome and amazing things happen
And yet through the plan God is going to train and raise of Moses to be a leader and a survivalist
10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
Moses is sent to live with the daughter of Pharaoh to be raised as her son
This is all part of the Gods plan
you and I read the story of Moses and we see wow praise God he saved Moses
That he could go and live a normal life
And yet God has something even better in store for Him
What we don’t see is God has placed him in the home of Pharaoh
The world powerhouse at the time
The best education system probably in that time
So God plan yes saved Moses
But it also prepared Moses to lead a county
He is being trained to lead a county
So when we say God has a plan of course He has a plan
When we start to think we understand that plan God places Moses in the house of Pharaoh to be trained up in how to lead a county because as we know the rest of the story
Once again church we can most assuredly trust the plan God has
When Moses was around 40 years of age
While still living in Pharaoh’s house he goes out because he still cares for his own people
And now he observes what is happening to his own people
11 Now it came about in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their hard labors; and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 So he looked this way and that, and when he saw there was no one around, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 He went out the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were fighting with each other; and he said to the offender, “Why are you striking your companion?” 14 But he said, “Who made you a prince or a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.”
Moses goes how and observe how horrible his own people are being treated
This is not an excuse to go and kill someone because they are treating your friend bad
What Moses did was wrong and it is evident by him looking this way and that to see if anyone was looking
He kills him
And then goes out again and sees his own people fighting
They bring up the fact that he killed someone
Now Moses knows that what he did has been found out
As you read this you start to think how in the world is this part of Gods plan
Remember that God has a plan and we need to trust that
God is going to use what Moses did to bring about His plan
Remember Moses has been trained in Pharaoh’s house to be a leader
But because of what Moses did Pharaoh seeks to kill Moses
15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock.
Moses flees into the wilderness and sets down by a well
The priest daughters come to water their flock and the local boys are giving them trouble and Moses stands up for them
Starting to see a bit of Moses’s character
He is going to stand up for the little guy
Moses is taken in by the Priest of Midian
He marries and has a family
The thought is Moses spends about 40 years in the wilderness
So when you start to think about Gods plan why in the world would He need to have a leader of a county who is comfortable leading a nation in the wilderness
Church do we see God plan played out in Moses’s life just like we did Joseph’s life last week
We can trust Gods plan for our life
We can trust that God has out best interest at heart when we are obedient to follow Him
Because church God is a good God
God had a plan to bring about the salvation of His chosen people
He need to prepare that man to fit His plan for salvation
So God had Moses be trained up in Egypt in how to be a leader
Then God knew the people would spend sometime in the wilderness and that leader needed to know how to live in the wilderness
So God has Moses live in the wilderness for 40 years
23 Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. 24 So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.
God did all that until the right time when He remembers His chosen people
Now don’t believe that the God of the universe
The all knowing God forgot about the Hebrews in Egypt
It wasn’t time yet
And now is the right time
Moses knows how to lead and know how to live in the wilderness
God is going to be with Moses and speak through Moses to His chosen people
So church as we come to out time of invitation this morning
You might be wondering what do I with the story of Moses
Trust God
God has a plan
Seek the Lord and He will be found
When He is found you be obedient
So maybe you are struggling with salvation
maybe you have questions
I would invite you to the front to speak with someone about those questions and then trust God He has a plan
Maybe you have a relationship with God and maybe you feel all alone and don’t know what God is doing
Trust the Lord
He hears you
Seek God and maybe this morning you need to spend sometime in the altar in prayer crying out to God seeking God
The altar is open
Gods mouth piece
Moses born
Moses saved and raised in Pharoahs house
Moses spent 40 in the wilderness
This is Gods plan to save his people
Moses at the burning bush
The conversation
God is calling Moses to something that He is not very comfortable with
