STRIFE; STRIVE In the RSV the twenty-eight occurrences of the verb “strive” translate six Hebrew terms and seven Greek terms, some of which share similar meanings. Several terms indicate a literal, physical struggle, e.g., a fight between individuals (Ex. 21:2 [Heb. nāṣâ]), a wrestling between Jacob and the angel of God (Gen. 32:28 [MT 29]; Hos. 12:3f [MT 4f] [śārâ]), and a battle against Yahweh, i.e., a waging of war against His people (Jer. 50:24 [hithpael of gārâ]). The image of physical fighting or struggling may be used figuratively for those who contend with the wicked (Prov. 28:4 [Heb. hithpael of gārâ]), for one who struggles in the realm of the spiritual life (Lk. 13:24; Col. 1:29; 1 Tim. 4:10 [Gk. agōnízomai]; Col. 2:1 [agṓn]), and for one who struggles together for the faith of the gospel (Rom. 15:30 [synagōnizomai]), and in prayer (Phil. 1:27 [synathléō]). “Strive” can also refer to a fighting that takes place on a verbal level, e.g., to attack with reproaches …

Sentence—One or more clauses that have a coordinate relationship to the preceding discourse. Sentences which begin a speech reported within the discourse are labeled as ‘sentences’, but are indented one level in the outline to reflect that they are technically dependent upon (i.e. subordinate to) the verb of speaking that introduces them. Sentences are coordinated to the preceding discourse using καὶ, δὲ, or asyndeton (the absence of a conjunction).
LDGNT Glossary
Sub-point—A clause that is grammatically dependent upon another one. In most cases, the clause upon which it depends precedes the sub-point. In ‘Complex’ constructions, the sub-point may precede the clause upon which it depends. Sub-points are normally signaled in Greek by ὅτι, ἵνα, εἰ, ἐὰν, καθὼς, or by a relative pronoun. Sentences which build upon the sub-point are indented and labeled as sub-points.
