Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 ESV

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

The Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4 “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;”

The first thing we see here in the text is that are varieties of gifts.

They are all from the same Spirit.

What are the Gifts of the Spirit mentioned in this Chapter?

Utterance of Wisdom.

Utterance of knowledge

Prophecy

Discernment

Now that we see the different kinds of Gifts, we can begin to break them down.

God empowers them to all

1 Corinthians 12:6 “and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.”

Believers should know that the gifts of the spirit is for all, and that the Holy Spirit is the one who imparts them.

The Corinthians were using the gifts , but one in particular was being overused. that was speaking in tongues -

Overemphasizing a Gift (tongues)

1 Corinthians 14:18–19 “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.”

Its important to see that the gifts come in variety, there are different gifting that do different things , that bring more edification to the body of believers.

Again Gifts form the spirit are not for our personal glorification, but it is to glorify God, By edification we glorify our God, and the body in unity accomplishes more for the kingdom of God.

Individuals can have more than one gift.
