We must see our circumstances through God’s love instead of, as we are prone to do, seeing God’s love through our circumstances.
Jerry Bridges

Bible Passage: Ex 17:1–7, Nu 20:1–13

Summary: The passages recount the Israelites' desperate need for water in the wilderness and God's miraculous provision by bringing forth water from a rock. In Ex 17, God commands Moses to strike the rock, whereas in Nu 20, Moses strikes the rock in anger, resulting in consequences for his leadership.
Application: This sermon addresses how God provides for our needs, even in times of doubt and despair. It encourages believers to trust in God's provision and grace, reminding them to handle frustrations with patience and obedience.
Teaching: The sermon illustrates God's faithfulness in providing for His people, the importance of obedience in our walk with God, and the implications of representing God's holiness in leadership roles.
How this passage could point to Christ: In these accounts, the rock represents Christ, as He is struck for our sins to provide living water (John 4:14). This foreshadows the ultimate provision of salvation and spiritual sustenance through Christ's sacrifice.
Big Idea: God graciously provides living water for our needs, calling us to trust Him and uphold holiness in our lives.
Recommended Study: Consider exploring the typology of the rock in relation to Christ's sacrifice in 1 Corinthians 10:4 using Logos to examine the original contexts of both passages. Additionally, look into the theological implications of obedience and leadership consequences in Israel’s history, noting any differing interpretations among scholars. This could enrich your understanding of how these events foreshadow the New Testament revelations of Christ.

1. Quarrel in the Wilderness

Ex 17:1–3
You could introduce the scene where the Israelites quarrel with Moses due to a lack of water. Highlight the vulnerability and desperation of the people but also their lack of trust in God's ongoing provision. Compare this tendency to our modern impatience and doubt in God's presence in difficult circumstances. Encourage the congregation to lean into faith and trust in God's promises, even when resources seem scarce.
When circumstances become difficult and you are in the furnace of testing, remain where God has put you until He tells you to move. Faith moves in the direction of peace and hope, but unbelief moves in the direction of restlessness and fear.
Warren W. Wiersbe
Circumstances are constantly affecting us and their purpose is to produce our sanctification. Pleasant circumstances and unpleasant circumstances. We should therefore be observant and always watching for lessons, seeking and asking questions.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (Welsh Preacher and Writer)

2. Provision from the Rock

Ex 17:4–7
Perhaps emphasize Moses' obedience in calling upon the Lord and God’s gracious response in providing water from the rock. Highlight the image of God’s faithfulness despite complaints and rebellion. Suggest that like Moses, we are to respond with prayer and obedience when facing challenges. This point connects to Christ as the ultimate manifestation of God’s grace, offering living water to quench our spiritual thirst.
Here’s what he did: He died of thirst so we could have the living water. He had the ultimate spiritual thirst. He died in torment so we could have the cool water of the favor of God.
Timothy Keller

3. Repeat Complaints and Obedience

Nu 20:1–8
Maybe focus on the second instance of the Israelites' complaint and God's instructions to speak to the rock. Delve into the theme of trust and reliance on God’s instructions. This event shows God's continuous provision even when circumstances repeat. Drawing a parallel, note that God’s resources are infinite, encouraging faithfulness amidst repetitive challenges. Reflect on Christ's steadfastness and mercy in the face of our recurring failures.

4. Consequences of Disobedience

Nu 20:9–13
You could discuss the striking of the rock and its implications for Moses. Highlight the consequence of disobedience and the loss of leadership privileges. Stress the importance of representing God's holiness faithfully, which Moses failed to do. Draw parallels to Christ, who, as the true Rock, was struck once for our salvation and emphasizes obedience and holiness in our lives through His example.
