Introduction

Change. Bukan topik asing. Kita tau itu diperlukan. Kebanyakan kita sadar bahwa kita perlu berubah. Tapi kalo mau jujur—it’s hard.
Sering kali kita ngomong kita mau lebih sabar, lebih disiplin, lebih seperti Yesus. Tapi seberapa sering kita benar-benar berubah? We hear sermons, we read the Word, we even nod in agreement. Yet, we remain the same. Why? Kenapa?
Jawabanya sangat simple : change isn’t just about knowing. It’s about doing. And that’s exactly what the book of James challenges us to confront.
Kitab Yakobus ini gak pake basa-basi, practical, dan to the point. Gak kaya kitab NT yang lain, Yakobus tidak menghabiskan waktu dengan teologi atau doktrin—dia langsung masuk pada action. He calls out believers who hear but don’t do. Pesan Utamanya? Faith without action is dead.
Satu kata kunci di Yakobus adalah “lakukan” (do). It appears 24 times in 17 verses in this book alone. Across the entire Bible? 2,386 times. Bukankah itu memberi tahu kita sesuatu: God doesn’t just want us to understand—He wants us to act.
Today, we’ll look at James 1:19-27 dan melihat tiga resep perubahan nyata

1. Throwing Out & Receiving In (The Posture of Change)

James 1:19–21 “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
Yakobus memulai dengan anger (kemarahan). Kenapa? Because anger shuts down our ability to receive truth.
Anger is a defense mechanism. It makes us justify, resist, and refuse to listen. When we're full of anger, pride, or bitterness, there's no room for transformation.
Imagine a cup full of poison. Even if you pour in the purest water, it will still be contaminated. The cup has to be emptied first.
👉 "You can’t receive truth with clenched fists."
What are you still holding onto?

2. Remembering: Listening to Living (The Practice of Change)

James 1:22-25 hits us with a hard truth:
James 1:22–25 ESV
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Hearing without doing is self-deception. It’s like looking in a mirror, seeing what’s wrong, and walking away unchanged.
Having the Recipe vs. Cooking the Dish
Imagine you have the best recipe in the world. You read it, memorize it, even explain it to others. But you never cook it. Will you ever master the dish? No.
Understanding doesn’t make you a chef—cooking does.
The same goes for faith. The more you do it, the more it becomes part of you. It’s in the doing that truth becomes second nature.
That’s why James says: “The one who acts will be blessed in what he does.” Not in what he hears. Not in what he knows. In what he does.
👉 "If Want to stop forgetting? Start doing."
What’s one truth you’ve heard many times but still haven’t acted on?

3. RESPONDING IN STEWARDSHIP (THE PURPOSE OF CHANGE)

James 1:26–27 ESV
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
James doesn’t define true faith by what we say, but by how we live.
Worship is Stewardship
Worship isn’t just singing in church. It’s how we steward our lives. Every word we speak, every decision we make, every action we take is an act of worship.
👉 "Worship is stewardship—every word and deed counts."
Are we managing our lives in a way that reflects Christ?
Closing : James, a skeptic to a steward.
Let me close with this.
Do you know who wrote this practical, no-nonsense book of James?
Yakobus—the brother of Jesus.
He grew up with Jesus. Knew Him personally. Yet, for most of his life, he didn’t believe. In fact, he was a skeptic.
But then something happened. He encountered the risen Christ.
And that one encounter changed him forever. He went from a skeptic to a steward—someone who dedicated his life to serving Christ.
If God could radically transform Yakobus, why not us?
Here’s my final question: Where are you still skeptical? What area of your life do you resist God’s voice?
Maybe you say: “I want to change, but I don’t know where to start.” Here’s the answer: Start where you’re still doubting.
The place where you hesitate the most? That’s where God is calling you to act.
👉 It’s not an easy journey. Yes, its a challenge, but it’s a calling. Will you respond?

FINAL CHALLENGE:

This week, don’t just hear this sermon—act on it. 📌 Identify what you need to throw out. 📌 Commit to practicing one biblical truth. 📌 Steward your life as worship.
Because change isn’t just about knowing. It’s about doing.
