Genesis 42 - 43 Summary
Genesis chapters 42-43 detail the beginning of Joseph's brothers' journey to Egypt during the famine and their initial encounters with him, whom they do not recognize. Here's a summary:
Genesis 42: Joseph's Brothers Go to Egypt:
A severe famine grips Canaan, and Jacob sends his ten older sons to Egypt to buy grain, having heard that grain is available there.
Joseph, now a powerful official, is in charge of selling grain.
Joseph recognizes his brothers, but they do not recognize him.
Joseph accuses them of being spies and tests them by demanding that they bring their youngest brother, Benjamin, to him.
The brothers, in their distress, confess their guilt regarding their treatment of Joseph years earlier.
Joseph imprisons them for three days, then releases all but Simeon, whom he keeps as a hostage.
He secretly returns their money in their grain sacks.
The brothers return to Canaan and tell Jacob what happened, and they discover the money in their sacks, which terrifies them.
Genesis 43: The Brothers' Second Journey to Egypt:
The famine continues, and the grain they brought from Egypt is nearly gone.
Jacob is reluctant to send Benjamin, fearing for his safety, but Judah persuades him, vouching for Benjamin's safe return.
Jacob instructs his sons to take gifts and double the money to return the money that was in their sacks.
The brothers return to Egypt and are brought to Joseph's house.
Joseph orders that they have a feast.
Simeon is released.
Joseph struggles to contain his emotions when he sees Benjamin.
The brothers are seated in order of their birth, which astonishes them.
Benjamin receives five times as much food as the other brothers.
In essence, these chapters depict the brothers' fear and guilt, Joseph's strategic testing of their character, and the growing tension as the brothers are drawn further into Joseph's plan.
