Text: John 3:16-17 (ESV) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him."

Introduction: The Most Famous Verse for a Reason

If you grew up in church, you’ve probably heard John 3:16 a thousand times. Even if you didn’t, you’ve seen it on posters at football games or written on coffee cups. It’s been called “the gospel in a nutshell” because it sums up the entire message of the Bible in one verse. But let’s be honest—sometimes when we hear something over and over, we lose sight of how powerful it really is.
Today, we’re going to slow down and take a fresh look at this passage. Because in these two short verses, Jesus reveals the greatest love story ever told—God’s rescue mission for a lost and broken world.

I. The Greatest Love

"For God so loved the world..."

A Love Like No Other

The world has a lot of definitions for love. We say we love pizza, we love our pets, we love our families. But when God says He loves us, it’s a whole different level. This isn’t a casual, fleeting feeling—this is an eternal, unstoppable, self-sacrificing love.
Romans 5:8 “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
God's love is unconditional.
He didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up. He loved us at our worst.
He doesn't just love "humanity" in a general sense. He loves you personally, right where you are.
God's love is personal.
Luke 15
The parable of the lost sheep.
The parable of the lost coin.
The parable of the Prodigal Son.
The Father is constantly REJOICING over the returning of His lost ones… his sons and daughters, his greatest treasures.
Do you know that you are treasured?
Do you know your value in the Father’s sight? You are without number when it comes to value.
God's love is relentless.

Who Does God Love?

"For God so loved the world..."
Not just the “good” people. Not just the religious people. Not just one nation or one group. Not just the Jew, not just the Greek. Not the church attender, not the church hater. The whole world.
That means the broken, the outcasts, the addicted, the self-righteous, the ones who think they have it all together and the ones who know they don’t. The one’s who know there is grace, and those who don’t.
“For God so loved the world…

Application: Are You Living in the Reality of God's Love?

Some of us have heard "God loves you" so many times that we don’t really believe it anymore.
Others of us think, “Yeah, God loves people… but not me.”
The truth? He does. And He proved it.

II. The Greatest Gift

"…that He gave His only Son..."

Love Always Gives

Real love isn’t just words—it’s action.
God didn’t just say He loved us. He gave the greatest gift imaginable: His Son.
This wasn’t a spare son. This wasn’t one of many. It was His only Son.

What Did It Cost?

Philippians 2:6-8“[Jesus]… emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
Jesus left heaven. He left glory. He stepped into our mess, into our suffering.
The cross wasn’t just a Roman execution—it was God taking the punishment for our sin.

Why Would God Do This?

Isaiah 53:5“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
Because there was no other way to save us.

Application: Have You Received the Gift?

A gift has to be received. God has given His Son, but what have you done with that gift?
Are you still trying to earn your way to God? Or have you surrendered to Jesus?

III. The Greatest Invitation

"…that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

Who is Invited?

Whoever.
Not the smartest, not the richest, not the most religious—just whoever believes.
This means it doesn’t matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done. The door is open to you.

What Does It Mean to Believe?

This is more than just agreeing that Jesus exists. Even demons believe that (James 2:19).
Belief means trusting in, clinging to, and relying on Jesus alone for salvation.
John 1:12“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

The Two Destinies

Should not perish – This is real. Jesus speaks of hell more than anyone else in Scripture.
But have eternal life – Life with God forever. Not just in the future, but starting now.

Application: Where Do You Stand?

This is the dividing line of eternity.
You are either trusting in Jesus or trusting in yourself.
You are either headed toward eternal life or eternal separation from God.

IV. The Greatest Rescue Mission

"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him."

Jesus Came to Save, Not Condemn

A lot of people think God is just waiting to punish them. That He’s angry and wants to destroy them.
But Jesus didn’t come to bring condemnation—He came to bring salvation.

The World Was Already Condemned

John 3:18 (the next verse) – “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
We weren’t neutral. We were already guilty, already lost.
Jesus didn’t come to push us toward condemnation—He came to pull us out of it!

Application: Have You Responded to the Rescue?

If you’re drowning and someone throws you a lifeline, you don’t debate about it—you grab on!
Jesus is the only way (John 14:6). Will you trust Him today?

Conclusion: What Will You Do With This?

This is the greatest love story ever told. But it’s not just a story—it’s an invitation.
God loves you.
He gave His Son for you.
He invites you to believe in Him.
He came to save, not condemn.
The question is: What will you do with this?
If you’ve never placed your trust in Jesus, today is the day. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today. Because this love, this gift, this salvation is too important to ignore.
Prayer:
For those who need to trust in Jesus for the first time.
For those who have grown distant, to be reminded of God's love.
For boldness to share this love with others.
Challenge: Share this love with someone this week. Because the world desperately needs to know the truth of John 3:16.
