Submit, Resist, and Live in Peace: Navigating Life’s Conflicts as Christians

Bible Passage: James 4:1-17 Big Idea: Conflicts arise from our selfish desires, but submission to God transforms our hearts and leads to peace and unity in our lives.

Introduction (5 Minutes)

Begin with a thought-provoking question: Why do conflicts arise so easily in our lives?
Share a brief real-life example of a common conflict—whether in the home, workplace, or church.
Introduce James 4:1-17, explaining how James addresses the root causes of strife and presents a solution.
State the sermon’s main idea: When we submit to God, resist worldly influences, and walk humbly, we experience peace and unity in our lives.

1. Desires that Divide (James 4:1-6) – (7 Minutes)

Read James 4:1-3 – Conflicts stem from selfish desires.
Explain how unchecked desires create division in relationships.
Read James 4:4-6 – Friendship with the world is enmity with God.
Illustrate with an example of how worldly ambition leads to brokenness.
Application: Challenge the congregation to examine their hearts—what desires are leading them away from God’s peace?
Christ Connection: Jesus modeled selflessness and humility (Philippians 2:5-8). His desire was to do the Father’s will, not seek personal gain.

2. Submit and Resist (James 4:7-10) – (7 Minutes)

Read James 4:7-10 – The call to submit to God and resist the devil.
Define submission: Yielding control to God in trust.
Define resistance: Rejecting temptation and worldly pride.
Use Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11) as an example of resisting the enemy and submitting to God.
Application: Encourage the congregation to reflect on ways they can submit to God in their daily lives.
Illustration: Share a testimony of someone who found peace by surrendering control to God.

3. Words that Wound (James 4:11-12) – (6 Minutes)

Read James 4:11-12 – The warning against slander and judgment.
Explain how pride leads to tearing others down instead of building them up.
Reference Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:36-37 about being accountable for every word.
Application: Encourage a commitment to speaking with humility and grace.
Illustration: Share a story of how words either destroyed or restored a relationship.
Christ Connection: Jesus spoke truth with love, demonstrating how believers should use their words to encourage rather than wound.

4. Plan with Purpose (James 4:13-17) – (5 Minutes)

Read James 4:13-17 – The danger of prideful planning without considering God’s will.
Explain the contrast: Worldly arrogance vs. humble dependence on God.
Illustration: The parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:16-21), who planned without considering God’s sovereignty.
Application: Encourage believers to surrender their plans to God and seek His will in every decision.
Christ Connection: Jesus lived with a mindset of "not my will, but Yours be done" (Luke 22:42), modeling the ultimate trust in God’s plan.
