INTRO

I’ve been on 4 mission trips.
2 to philippines.
1 in Africa.
1 in the Dominican Republic.
I’ve been a colporteur for 2 summers.
I’ve been a pastor for 5, going on 6 years.
Mission is not a trend, a fad, an event, or a career. It’s part of your DNA.

BODY

Matthew 5:13-16 — Salt & Light
5 Points on Mission
Mission isn’t about me, it’s about us — “You are the salt…you are the light”
After graduating SAU, I felt like I could change the world. But I soon found out, that I’m not superman.
“you” in the text isn’t talking about an individual. It’s talking about the community.
DISCUSS: With division all around us, what does unity look like to you?
Mission keeps the world alive. “You are the salt of the earth”
In the ancient world, salt was a preservative. It kept food from going bad.
In the same way, if we are the salt, we help the world from going bad.
Love is the power that’ll preserve the world.
DISCUSS: How can we help the city of San Diego become a more loving city?
Mission works when you’re real — v13b
Salt can’t be “unsalty”. If it’s not salty, then it’s no longer salt. Jesus is playing with his words here. He’s saying, “be you because that’s already who you are”
DISCUSS: Why is being authentically you hard for some people?
Mission needs you to show up. — v14a
“Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle.” — Benjamin Franklin.
God wants us to shine our light. We are called to serve our community.
DISCUSS: How can you serve your community beyond Global Youth Day?
Mission calls you out of hiding. — v14b
People hide away from loving others. But don’t hide.
DISCUSS: What’s one truth from scripture that helps you push past self-doubt?

CONCLUSION

kintsugi — This is a Japanese art style that takes broken pieces of clay and uses gold to bind them back together.
2 Corinthians 4:7–9 ESV
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;
