Numbers 22 - 24 Summary

Numbers chapters 22-24 tell the story of Balaam, a foreign prophet, and his interactions with Balak, the king of Moab, who sought to curse the Israelites. Here's a summary:
Numbers 22: Balak's Request and Balaam's Donkey:
Balak, king of Moab, is terrified of the Israelites' growing numbers and their victories.
He sends messengers to Balaam, a renowned prophet, to hire him to curse the Israelites.
God tells Balaam not to go, but after Balak's second request, God allows him to go, but only to speak what God tells him.
God's anger is kindled, and an angel of the Lord stands in the road to oppose Balaam.
Balaam's donkey sees the angel and turns aside three times, and Balaam beats the donkey.
God opens the donkey's mouth, and it speaks to Balaam, rebuking him for his cruelty.
God opens Balaam's eyes, and he sees the angel, who instructs him to speak only what God tells him.
Numbers 23: Balaam's First Two Oracles:
Balak takes Balaam to various high places to view the Israelites.
Balaam offers sacrifices and then speaks oracles given to him by God.
Instead of cursing the Israelites, Balaam blesses them, proclaiming their strength and God's faithfulness.
Balak is frustrated and takes Balaam to another location, but Balaam again blesses Israel.
Numbers 24: Balaam's Final Oracles:
Balaam, seeing that God intends to bless Israel, no longer seeks omens but sets his face toward the wilderness.
He delivers powerful oracles, prophesying Israel's future greatness and the downfall of their enemies.
He prophesies about a "star" that will come out of Jacob, a messianic prophecy.
Balak is furious and sends Balaam away.
In essence, these chapters highlight God's sovereignty over all nations and his unwavering commitment to blessing Israel. Despite Balak's attempts to thwart God's plan, God uses Balaam to proclaim his blessings and prophecies concerning Israel's future. The speaking donkey is also a very memorable part of this section of scripture.
