Mark 8:28-34
Mark 8:28-34
28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[b] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c] There is no commandment greater than these.”
32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
Jesus’ Response (Mark 12:29-31)
Jesus’ Response (Mark 12:29-31)
Love God Completely
“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” (Mark 12:29-30, quoting Deuteronomy 6:4-5)
Love Your Neighbor as Yourself
“The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31, quoting Leviticus 19:18)
How This Summarizes the Ten Commandments
How This Summarizes the Ten Commandments
First Four Commandments (Exodus 20:1-11) → About loving God (No other gods, no idols, don’t misuse God’s name, keep the Sabbath)
Last Six Commandments (Exodus 20:12-17) → About loving people (Honor parents, don’t murder, commit adultery, steal, lie, or covet)
The Scribe’s Response and Jesus’ Approval (Mark 12:32-34)
The Scribe’s Response and Jesus’ Approval (Mark 12:32-34)
The scribe agrees, saying that loving God and neighbor is “more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Jesus then tells him:
“You are not far from the kingdom of God.”
This passage teaches that true obedience to God is based on love, not just following rules. Jesus shows that all of God’s commandments are fulfilled in loving God and loving others.
