01-GENESIS 11:01-09

Date: 8/23/2001
Keywords: distraction, God’s will, obedience, prayer, vision

August 23, 2001

11:6. And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them . . .”

They made a decision and went ahead without considering that God might have other plans.
Isaiah 55 says the wicked should forsake his way and his thoughts because God’s thoughts and way are much higher.
Colossians 2 & 3 say the same thing. Instead of seeking things on earth that have an appearance of wisdom, we are to seek those things which are above.
Hughes talks about the imagination and how God gives a vision that stirs the soul so a person has a deep conviction that it is more than daydreaming or wishful thinking. Then he warns that all our faculties have been affected by the Fall and become “the chief means to aspire to godhead”.
I imagine many things: a mystery book, a book of memories, a quilt, day care centers established in nursing homes (the latest) and am often convinced that God is calling me to the task. Then I become distracted or disinterested. The challenge loses its appeal and I go on to other things. Is that a flaw in my ‘teacher’s easily distracted’ temperament? Or is it a failure to obey God?
All the more reason to go into the desert and seek the face of God. I don’t need to wait for Him to take me there but choose to spend more time seeking His will on these imagined ideas. It could be that some of them are from the Lord but if they are not, then I am continually being derailed from whatever He might want me to do.
