Seeing Through Faithful Eyes

Today, we will be finishing Mark chapter 10 so go ahead and find this in your copy of God’s word. These last 3 chapters have consisted of Jesus really taking time to teach his disciples what it means to follow him. We have seen some growth in his disciples, but there have been times where we see the human sinful nature of them come out. We are coming off of the heels of James and John asking for Jesus to give them the best seats in the kingdom of God. We have someone else ask Jesus to do something for them now.
46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.
47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.”
50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.
51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.”
52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.
Introduction - Our passage today is the last physical healing that we see Jesus do in the gospel of Mark. But it is clear that it is an important one.
When reading our text for today, I cannot help but see the mercy that was shown to this many by Jesus. It takes me to a story that Jesus told his disciples that you may be familiar with, the good Samaritan. (traveling, attacked, left for dead, priest and Levite pass by, Samaritan stops, renders aid, takes him to an inn and pays for his care).
36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”
37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Mercy is a big part of the life of a Christian. We are shown such great mercy by Jesus for giving us a new life that we do not deserve. And in turn, as we mature more and more in our Christ-likeness, we show mercy to others.
Main Point: The love of Christ is seen in Him showing mercy to the hurting
Main Point: The love of Christ is seen in Him showing mercy to the hurting
When we look at this text and we see the main point of the text, it begs the question…
Probing Question: Do we show the love of Christ to others through our mercy?
Let us keep that question in mind as we go through God’s word today. Using the theme of this man regaining his sight and how we must have faithful eyes, there are 3 sub-points in our text today that I see.
