INTRO: There couldn't be greater contrast Nicodemus and the samaritan woman. One a man the other a woman; Jew vs Samaritan; a respected ruler vs social outcast; one was seen as moral vs immoral; one came at night vs mid-day
The Jew’s considered samaritans as scum of the earth
Manassa, son of the high priest married the daughter of the governor of Samaria, a Persian . The governor of Jerusalem ordered that him to dissolve this marriage which checked all the boxes for being un-equally yoked, but Manassa refused. So Manassa was kicked out of Jerusalem by none other than the prophet Nehemiah, but thats not the end of the story. Manassa was made The high priest of the Samaritans by his father in law who arranged for a temple to be built on Mount Gerizim.
A Rabbinic law of a.d. 66 stated that Samaritan women were considered as continually menstruating and thus unclean. Therefore a Jew who drank from a Samaritan woman’s vessel would become ceremonially unclean.
Not only did the Jews avoid contact with the Samaritans but Jewish men avoided speaking with women in public—even their own wives!157
So Jesus, talking to a Samaritan and a woman...and an immoral one at that..well that would radical and unforgivable to the church folk in Jerusalem.

The detour 4:1-6
He left Judaea= atheken. The idea the word conveyed is: leaving someone to their own devices. From now on, Jesus would leave Jerusalem and Judaea to their own devices and the bulk of His ministry would be in Galilee and elsewhere.
The Top 10 Lessons From “The Well”
10. Jesus Is Always Willing To Meet You
John 4:4 “But He needed to go through Samaria.”
9. Jesus Cares Deeply About Everyone, Regardless Of Their Social Status
The Salvation message of Jesus transcends social, racial, and religious divides.
It’s for the rich up on walstreet and the drug attic on bourbon street
John 4:9 “Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.”
God never has given preference to social caste systems
Consider the story of David, a shepherd boy, overlooked by his own family. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint a king, everyone expected to see the strongest or the tallest, but God chose David—lowly and humble. This teaches us that God sees not what man sees; He treasures the heart, and from the lowliest, He can create greatness. Just as He anointed David, He can use us, regardless of our background or status.
8. Sin Must Be Dealt With Before You Get “Living Water.”
John 4:15–17 “The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband”
This was a setup by Jesus to deal with her true condition
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
7. Recognize The Free, Beautiful Gift Of Jesus And The Salvation He Brings
Going back to what Jesus said to the Samaritan woman in verse 10:
John 4:10 “Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
The Living water Jesus is talking about here is “eternal life.”
Romans 5:18 “Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.”
Sadly, most of the world will tell you to keep your gift, cause they don’t want it.
6. Take Advantage of Every Opportunity To Witness About Jesus
John 4:28–29 “The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
Look at what power her testimony had!
Her witness led to the salvation of the people in her town and led to revival
5. You Have To Be Willing To Leave The Old Things Behind To Get Something New
John 4:30 “Then they went out of the city and came to Him.”
It also make me think of Abraham. God told him to pack up and leave his fathers house and go to a land that “I will show you.” It doesn’t need to make sense, you just need faith
4. You Don’t Always Know The Impact You’ve had, While On Earth
John 4:36–38 “And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
1 Corinthians 3:6 “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”
I believe when we get to Heaven people will come up and thank us for what we did or said down here on Earth that we had forgotten, that changed their lives and helped lead them to the cross and Jesus.
3. There Are Rewards For Our Work In The Fields
John 4:36 “And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.”
think the joy you’ll experience when you see your children or grandchildren, or your spouse that’s with you in Heaven, that you never gave up on, or that little 7 year old who you led to salvation in Sunday school will be absolutely priceless!!
Luke 15:7 “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”
2. Our Food Is The Same As Jesus’s Food
John 4:34 “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
We are to also to do what God’s will is for us, and finish the work that He has for us. He now challenges us to complete our task and complete our purpose for being here on Earth
John 20:21 “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Your Testimony Has Great Power
John 4:39 “And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”
John 4:40–42 “So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. And many more believed because of His own word. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
2 Timothy 2:4 “No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.”
