HIS IMAGE: CENTER OF ALL

1. Christ: Center of Creation

Colossians 1:17 CSB
17 He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.
Jesus controls the entire universe.
Think back to when you were born. Jesus was there before that.
Think back to when your grandparents were born. Jesus was there before that.
Thank back to your great-great grandparents. Jesus was there before that.
Think back to Noah, now Abraham, now Adam & Eve. Jesus was there before that.
Think back to when there wasn’t even an angel in heaven. There was nothing except 3 things which together were 1.
You had God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all alive and equal.
God is BEFORE all things.
Genesis 1:1 CSB
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The beginnings here is the beginning of creation, not the beginning of God. God has always been and always will be.
Jesus is the author of all creation
Colossians 1:16 CSB
16 For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through him and for him.
Thankfully, God does not just create and forget.
He does not forget, leave or ignore the things that He had created.
Christ creates, sustains and controls not just the world as we know it, but the entire universe. (includes all the other planets, stars, spiritual beings - all)
God holds all things together!
Colossians 1:17 CSB
17 He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.
There are so many passages that we can go into, but lets take a look at Psalm 104:24-30
Psalm 104:24–30 CSB
24 How countless are your works, Lord! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number— living things both large and small. 26 There the ships move about, and Leviathan, which you formed to play there. 27 All of them wait for you to give them their food at the right time. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. 29 When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. 30 When you send your breath, they are created, and you renew the surface of the ground.
Everything looks to Christ to hold it together.
Jesus is the KRAGLE! (LEGO Movie)
All creation looks to Christ to provide the needs of each thing to it. All because He is Creator & Sustainer.
What does the Christian gain from Christ being not just the creator but also the sole sustainer?
The knowledge that no matter what you are going through, how bad or scary something seems, you can trust that Jesus can hold it together!
The Christian gains knowledge that we can entrust our entire life to Him, no matter what is going on when.
God is the sustainer!
As John Phillips said it - “He created the universe. He claims the universe. He controls the universe.”

2. Christ: Head of the Church

Colossians 1:18 CSB
18 He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.
Think about your body for a minute.
What does the thinking? - Head
When your head decides where it wants to go, the rest of your body follows.
Jesus is the head of the church.
He is the one who should be determining where and when we go anywhere, along with what we do.
Paul goes on to explain that Jesus is not just the head of the church, but also that He is the firstborn.
This implies that He has always been first.
Jesus has been there since the beginning.
He was the firstborn from the dead, all so He will always come in first place in everything.

Conclusion:

We see that Christ is the creator and the sole sustainer of all, to include being the head of the church.
This is great news for the Christian!
Christ cannot just be a part of our lives, He must be the CENTER of them.
This gives us peace and comfort no matter what chaos surrounds us. We can always look at Christ and look to His guidance for direction and purpose, and we can always remember that as His children, we are ALWAYS under His Lordship.
