Part 6: The Passion Week
Text - John 12.27-31
27 “Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him!”
30 Jesus responded and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours.
31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

Background eventss
6 days before the Passover - John 12.1-3
6 days before the Passover - John 12.1-3
1 Therefore, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
2 So they made Him a dinner there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.
3 Mary then took a pound of very expensive perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
The next day - Sunday - John 12.12-13
12 On the next day, when the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the King of Israel!”
triumphal entry- where it actually happened -Matthew 21.1-5
triumphal entry- where it actually happened -Matthew 21.1-5
1 When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus then sent two disciples,
2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with it. Untie them and bring them to Me.
3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them on immediately.”
4 Now this took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled:
5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your King is coming to you, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
the people welcome him on the road near the mount of olives - Luke 19.36-40
36 Now as He was going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road.
37 And as soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,
38 shouting: “Blessed is the King, the one who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 And yet some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!”
40 Jesus replied, “I tell you, if these stop speaking, the stones will cry out!”
Jesus was welcome by His disciples - the lowly people of Israel
But He was rejected by the leaders of Israel - the pharisees, etc.

Jesus weeps over Jerusalem - Luke 19.41-44
41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
42 saying, “If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.
43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will put up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,
44 and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
Because Israel rejected the Son of God, the nations was rejected by God!
Israel missed his time of visitation
Israel will miss its “peace”
THE KING HAS ARRIVED, WELCOMED BY A FEW BELIEVERS BUT REJECTED BY THE WHOLE NATION.
11 He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name,
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

Background - Mark 11.11
11 And Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple area; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.

12 On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry.
13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.
14 And He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.
Thy return on the same way later and finds the fig tree - Mark 11.20-25
20 As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up.
21 And being reminded, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi, look, the fig tree that You cursed has withered.”
22 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.
23 Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted to him.
24 Therefore, I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you.
25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you for your offenses.

15 Then they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple area and began to drive out those who were selling and buying on the temple grounds, and He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves;
16 and He would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple grounds.
17 And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written: ‘my house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”
18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard this, and they began seeking how to put Him to death; for they were afraid of Him, because all the crowd was astonished at His teaching.

27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him,
28 and began saying to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?”
29 But Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.”
31 And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’
32 But should we say, ‘From men’?”—they were afraid of the people, for they all considered John to have been a real prophet.
33 Answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”
Jesus begins to expose the failure of Israel’s leaders through parables
parable of the two sons - Matthew 21.28-32
parable of the landowner - Matthew 21.29-45
JESUS DEMONSTRATED HIS GOD-GIVEN AUTHORITY
to give life and to judge - John 5.26-27
26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
QUESTIONED AND RESISTED BY THE POWERS THAT BE!
The day of conflict - Tuesday, 3 days before the crucifixion

The leaders of Israel began to plot how they might kill Him - Matthew 22.15
15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said.
12 And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He told the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.
THEY QUESTIONED HIS TEACHINGS
on taxation - Matthew 22.16-22
16 And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone.
17 Tell us then, what do You think? Is it permissible to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?”
18 But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?
19 Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.
20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 And hearing this, they were amazed; and they left Him and went away.

On the greatest commandment
Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of the Pharisees - Matthew 23
Jesus delivers the Olivet discourse of His second coming - Matthew 24-25
Jesus announces His death by crucifixion - Matthew 26.1-5
1 When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples,
2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion.”
3 At that time the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas;
4 and they plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.
5 But they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”

16 And from then on he looked for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.
JESUS ATTACKED HIS ENEMIES IN PUBLIC BY EXPOSING THEIR LIES AND HYPOCRISIES

29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him!”
30 Jesus responded and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours.
31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.”
33 Now He was saying this to indicate what kind of death He was going to die.
34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’ ? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and hid Himself from them.
after this, Jesus hid from public view

2 And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,
4 got up from supper and laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and tied it around Himself.

64 Therefore, give orders for the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.”
66 And they went and made the tomb secure with the guard, sealing the stone.
HIS ABSENCE DOES NOT MEAN GOD WAS DEAD!
HIS ABSENCE IS SHORT REPOSE FOR HIS BODY THAT SUFFERED SO MUCH!
HIS ABSENCE WAS ONLY IN PHYSICAL EXISTENCE - BUT HIS SPIRIT WENT TO PRISON - 1 Peter 3.18-20
18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
19 in which He also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison,
20 who once were disobedient when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.

2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone, and sat upon it.
3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
4 The guards shook from fear of him and became like dead men.
5 And the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified.
6 He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
24 But God raised Him from the dead, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
