What Are The Odds? - Week 1

Praying for China, Asking God to guide their decisions in a way that promotes peace, stability, and prosperity for all citizens, and encourages greater respect for human rights and religious freedom.

Praying for Africa Asking the lord to send consistent rain, for crops to grow and for people and livestock to drink in the Horn of Africa.

Heal the bodies of precious little ones who suffer from malnutrition, and strengthen the men and women who are working hard to return them to full health.

Heavenly Father have mercy upon them.

Father, I pray that you set their governments and organizations upon the solid rock of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praying for People & Children around the world.

I pray for the wars with Russia & Ukraine, Israel & Hamas, I pray Lord for your comfort for those affected by these wars.

I Pray for the people of Gaza to be able to receive humanitarian relief so they wouldn’t have to experiencing starvation, and suffering.

We invite the Holy Spirit to join us this morning

Against All Odds, Sermon 1

Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Good morning everyone!

I’m excited about the new series we’re launching today!

We are five weeks from celebrating Easter, the most miraculous day in history.

So for the next four weekends I want to prepare us for that great day by learning and recalling all that Jesus did to make it happen.

PREMISE

On Easter, God did what only God could do, In order to do what only God could do.

PURPOSE OF EASTER

What does that mean?

Well, God saw that human beings were racking up sin.

We couldn’t make up for the things we were doing wrong, justice needed to be served and we couldn’t pay for it.

We were helpless to help ourselves.

So God helped in a way only God could:

He sent His Son, Jesus, to make a substitutionary payment for our sins:

His life for ours.

SURVEY

Raise your hand if you’ve ever rolled a stop sign...

Raise your hand if you’ve ever driven over the speed limit...

If you are over 16 and not raising your hand right now, just about everyone on this stream, is pretty sure you’re not telling the truth

I won’t ask how many of you have ever texted while driving, or used a non-hands-free phone to make a call from your car.

The point is...

WE CAN’T POSSIBLY PAY FOR ALL OUR SINS

What if you had to pay a $200 fine every time you broke a traffic law?

You would be incapable of paying the price.

It would be too high.

The Bible says every time you cross a moral line, there’s a price to be paid.

Every time we cheat on a test.

Every time we fudge on the truth.

Every time we take something that isn’t ours.

Every time we say something to hurt someone else.

Every time we cross a sexual boundary.

Every time we… you fill in the blank.

God knew we couldn’t pay the price, so He sent His Son to pay it for us.

Only our punishment isn’t a monetary fine, it’s a spiritual one: when we do something that separates us from God, we have to live separated from God… forever.

God didn’t want it this way!

God so loved the world that He didn’t want there to be separation from any of us.

So He sent His Son, Jesus to pay for our sin.

The only thing that disqualifies us from receiving this sin-payment is an unwillingness to accept His sin-payment on our behalf.

UNBELIEF

We wouldn’t have believed this offer of sin-payment unless God had done something extraordinary to make us sit up and take notice.

So what Jesus did was historic, supernatural, and sacrificial.

I’m calling this series, Against All Odds, because what Jesus did for us really was Against All Odds, even though it was predicted.

PROPHETIC PREDICTION

Follow me for a minute:

Hundreds of years before He came to earth, God sent a series of prophets to tell us what Jesus would do.

One of those prophets was named Isaiah.

Isaiah lived 700 years before Jesus.

He wrote one of the longest books in the Bible and he lived one of the longest lives of a prophet.

His active ministry lasted 60 years.

Somewhere during that time, he wrote a powerful chapter of scripture.

This chapter, written 7 centuries before Jesus, is so accurate that it’s either scary, or supernatural.

I’m Forecasting now/NEED

Over the next 5 weeks, we’re going to focus on Isaiah 53 almost every weekend.

By the time we’re through, you’re going to know Isaiah 53, and you’re going to be more astounded by Jesus than you are right now.

SCRIPTURE

The message of Isaiah 53 actually starts in Isaiah 52.

Unlike Jeremiah, who also speaks about being like a lamb led to the slaughter (

RANDOM PREDICTIONS

I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that the L.A. Lakers are going to win and NBA Championship within the next 3 years.

I’m also going to predict that the Denver Broncos will win a Super Bowl within the next decade.

And that the Dow Jones will hit 30,000 within 3 years.

What would you think if I also predicted that England will exit the European Union and the world won’t have an economic collapse?

I’m going to predict that , Meghan Markle will have 3 children, and two of them will have blue eyes.

I’m going to predict that North Korea will relinquish their nuclear weapons,

and that Mike Pence will be the next President of the United States.

All told, that’s 7 prophecies.

(And don’t worry. I’m not really predicting these things, I just want to throw 7 predictions out there to make a point.)

The point is, what is the likelihood of me getting these all right?

What if I raised the ante by making 5 more random predictions, for a total of 12?

What are the odds even half of my predictions come true,

What are the odds I could get twice that many predictions right?

If I could get even a few of those right, you all would start consulting with me for stock market advice and fantasy football drafts, wouldn’t you?

PETER STONER

Several years ago, Dr. Peter Stoner did a study in mathematical probabilities.

He knew from studying the Bible that Jesus Christ fulfilled over 330 prophecies of Scripture while He was on the earth.

Stoner, who was a mathematician by trade, set out to calculate the probability that anyone could fulfill that many events predicted in the future.

If you toss a coin up in the air, the probability it will land heads is 50%, or ½.

The probability that it will land heads twice in a row is 25%, or ¼.

What is the probability that one man could fulfill 320 Biblical predictions?

We’ll never know.

When Stoner got to the probability that anyone could fulfill 8 Scripture predictions, the number was so large, he had to use an analogy for it.

Stoner’s number for 8 prophecies was 1 x 10 to the 17 power.

That’s a 1 with 17 zeroes behind it.

The English word for it is “One hundred quadrillion.”

Stoner said, “To appreciate how large this number is, imagine filling the state of Texas 2 feet deep in silver dollars.”

“Then, mark one silver dollar with a red “X” and mix them all up.

“Blindfold someone, spin them around, and have them pick that dollar on the first try.”

That’s the probability that anyone could fulfill 8 prophecies.

The total number of atoms in the universe is 1 followed by 80 zeroes!

SEGUE

700 years before Jesus of Nazareth came to earth, the Prophet Isaiah recorded 24 predictions about Him.

Twenty-four, that all came true.

What are the odds?

FORECAST

Let me walk you through these.

Isaiah 52:13 says… 13 See, my servant will be successful; he will be raised and lifted up and greatly exalted.

According to Isaiah, one day, God will send His Servant to earth, and that Servant will be successful.

Lots of people have been successful, so God clarifies further:

His Servant will be so successful that one day He will be “raised and lifted up and greatly exalted.”

Let me show you how exalted Jesus is today.

Revelation 1:17 is a picture of the resurrected Jesus in heaven.

The Apostle John sees Him there and writes…

When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last, 18 and the Living One. I was dead, but look—I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:17-18

Prophecy fulfilled:

1. Successful -

One for Isaiah.

One for the Bible.

And one for Jesus!

There was a moment when it didn’t look like any of this success would happen.

The next verse says…

14 Just as many were appalled at you— his appearance was so disfigured that he did not look like a man, and his form did not resemble a human being—

Why were they appalled?

Because Jesus was beaten so badly that He was almost unrecognizable.

The Romans flogged Him with a cat-o-nine tails.

If you’ve seen the movie, “The Passion of the Christ,” you know that Jesus was so badly beaten He almost looked inhuman, like something out of a sci-fi movie.

So prophecy #2 - He was disfigured.

2. Disfigured

TRANSITION

The final verse of chapter 52 says…

15 so he will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of him, for they will see what had not been told them, and they will understand what they had not heard.

“The sprinkling of nations” refers to receiving the Good News.

Messengers of Jesus have sprinkled the Good News in every nation of the world.

Often, when a king, like King Agrippa in Acts 26, or King Clovis of the Frankish Kingdom in 500 A.D. heard the Good News, they just shut their mouths.

Clovis and others, once they understood what they had not previously heard, led their kingdoms to convert to Christianity.

So fulfilled prophecy #3 Jesus’ message…

3. Reached nations & kings

TRANSITION

Moving along, the first verse of Isaiah 53 doesn’t have a prophecy, just a question.

Then verse 2 says…

He grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him.

The unique thing about this is… He grew up!

Until the birth of Jesus, no one believed that when the Messiah came, He would come as a baby.

But God, through Isaiah, prophesied this would happen.

So prophecy #4 -

4. Grew up

TRANSITION

So far, we’ve covered only 5 verses and 4 prophecies.

And, their is more.

The first 5 verses have 4 prophecies. The last 10 verses have 20.

We don’t have time today to cover all the prophecies.

THE POINT IS:

Jesus’ death was historic.

Supernatural.

Sacrificial.

And predicted.

(And predicted, and predicted.)

Lest anyone is tempted to believe it was a giant accident.

He inscribed it in Scripture centuries before it happened

This is the story of Jesus.

The story of Isaiah 53.

APPLICATION

We will celebrate it on Easter.

And I am praying that you will be praying about inviting as many friends as possible to hear the story of the One who loved them, Against All Odds.

And died for them, Against All Odds.

And rose Against All Odds, to give them the opportunity to experience eternal life.

Let’s pray together.

Salvation:

The Word of God says in: John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:13 NKJV

For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
