Laban and Bethuel answered,”This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.”
Obviously these men knew God too. If not, they may have ridiculed Abraham’s servant and his prayer for guidance. As amazing as a ‘coincidence’ would be, those who scorn God also mock prayer, at least until they are in a foxhole.
The key idea here is that by praying very specifically, a person can know what is from the Lord and what is not. This servant asked not only that a girl serve him water but that she offered to water his camels. He didn’t ask that she be from Abraham’s family but when she was, he was even more certain that this was the one.
I’ve a dozen questions to ask God sometimes. Do I do this or that? How do I teach this lesson? What do I say to that person? I’m not specific enough in my prayers because I sometimes don’t know if they are being answered.
Lord, I don’t always know exactly what to ask when I pray for other people and perhaps I don’t need to know in some cases, but in things pertaining to my family or to my own activities, help me be very specific, not just so I know when You answer but also that I know what happens is of God.
