WE live to know Him and Make Him known
Connect number
Culture:
1 Timothy 3:15 NKJV
15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Foundation of truth
the Pillars of society
Uphold truth above all else
This is a two fold sermon for this year
I want you to not only know the Heart of this church
I want you to come up with your own culture for your family
What are you core values for your family?
I’m going to give you homework for this year
Come up with core values for your family and your own life
House Rules:
2 Timothy 2:20 NKJV
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.
Proverbs 25:4–5 NKJV
4 Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. 5 Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness.
Dross /drŏs, drôs/
noun
1. Waste or impure matter 2. The scum that forms on the surface of molten metal as a result of oxidation
Purity is only achieved through fire
The word of God is here to remove the impurities of the world
The impurities of your speech(your words are important)
The impurities of you thoughts
The impurities of you heart
Fishing Weights
The ways of the World need to be removed by fire
Our ways need to be burned out
Hebrews 13 our God is an all consuming fire
The word of God is here to remove things out of our lives
So we reflect less of us and More of Jesus
Isaiah 55- Your ways aren’t mine, your thoughts aren’t mine-Mine are higher! Way Higher
If you look at popular culture you can see what we value as a society
I got to thinking
What makes a great Movie?
Storyline
funny
Plot usually
Maybe it’s historical
Maybe it takes you to a place you wish you could be
I was thinking about some of my favorite movies and what was a common theme of them
Obviously #1 is Jeremiah Johnson
in college I had convinced my roommates that the movie was based on a great great grandpa of mine
I used to carry a copy of it in my car just in case someone hadn’t seen it
Some of the greatest movies of all time:
Gladiator
Man on Fire
Open Range
John Wick
Gangs of New York
And the obvious Conan the Barbarian
Are all based on revenge
There is a crazy emphasis and glorification of revenge in our society
Justice is served
We love seeing justice
We like seeing the enemy get destroyed
We love seeing justice served
Walk away feeling good when you see criminals “get what they deserved”
But the Lord says Justice is mine says the Lord
We love seeing revenge- goes back to the playground
Rap battles- I don’t know much about current popular music
I haven’t watched single football game in years
Somehow I knew that Drake and Kendrick had a feud and people were waiting to see the response or the
Revenge
Boys Avenge ME!
1 Corinthians 1:25–31 (NKJV)
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—31 that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”
Even as Christians, when people wrong us we seek revenge or justice
Instead of redemption
I’m going to share with you probably the most important core value we have
Because without this one none of the other ones matter
Forgiveness:
Colossians 3:13 NKJV
13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
WE put it this way:
We are quick to forgive because the Lord forgave us and He gave us a commandment to forgive others. Forgiveness brings freedom and guards our hearts from offense.
We are quick to forgive because gave his only Son to forgive us
God is so quick with His forgiveness that He forgave you in Faith that you would choose him
We forgive not because we feel like it
We don’t wait for an apology
We forgive, because God commands it
Matthew 18:21–22 NKJV
21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
In Luke’s account of this same conversation
The disciples here this and they say, Increase our Faith
The casting out of demons didn’t bother them as much
They didn’t say give me faith to calm storms
They didn’t mind the fact that Jesus went around overturning tables
Or healing blind people
But when they hear about Forgiveness
How many times?
INCREASE OUR FAITH
THE UNFORGIVING SERVANT:
Matthew 18:23 NKJV
23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
When you hear the Words the kingdom of heaven is like, you better pay attention!
A king who wanted to settle accounts with His Servant
10,000 talents:
A talent was equal to approximately 75 pounds.
Therefore, this would be the equivalent of 750,000 pounds of gold. That would be 12 million ounces of gold.
At a price of $600 per ounce, that would equal $7.2 billion.
In MPE (modern purchasing equivalent), this would represent approximately $114 million if these were talents of silver.
In our reference we have 100 dollar bill
I owe Pastor Glen 100 dollars cause he gave me 100 dollars
You have 100 bucks on you?
I need my money back here if you don’t pay me I’m going to make you a slave
This was the way debts used to be settled.
Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all
Pastor Glen lets me of the hook, offers me forgiveness
100 Pence- Denari
A pence (penny) equaled a day’s wage (Matthew 20:2).
So this man owed the equivalent of around three and a half months’ wages.
Depending on what you fix as a day’s wage, this amount could vary greatly.
Let’s set a day’s wage at $100.
At that figure, this would equal $10,000 worth of debt.
0.00014 percent of the ten-thousand-talent debt the other man had been forgiven
In the actual context it a way greater disparity between the two numbers
And I go to:
And say can I have my penny back?
And he says I don’t have it right now
Matthew 18:32 NKJV
32 Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
He actually calls Him wicked
Matthew 18:33–35 NKJV
33 Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ 34 And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. 35 “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”
Indentured servanthood:
If you couldn’t pay the debt you owed you had to work it off or become
A Servant or a slave to the person you owed it to
Of course, the amount of money Jesus was using in this illustration could never be paid back in one lifetime.
So this was slavery for the rest of this man’s life.
Josie Come up Here
The debt became transferable
Generational Debt of offense
Your offense sets the debt for you children to hold onto
You think you just have unsettled things with your parents
Guess who is accumulating that debt?
The people in your house will inherit your offense if you’re not careful
A Debt we could never pay off
Jesus paid such a huge price for us to be forgiven
It cost him his blood and His life
He took on what we deserved in order for us to have
That’s why we place such a huge value on forgiving others
Forgiveness is faith:
Church hurt
Abuse
Someone who didn’t stop abuse
Abandonment
Church hurt
What are you holding on that you need to let go of?
What debt are you holding onto when God cleared yours
You have to release it
Mark 11:23–26 NKJV
23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. 25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Walls of Jericho(Picture)
Some of you been fighting to get inside you promised-land but you can’t because you have laid unforgiveness down
You want the rest of this stuff to work? you have to forgive
This is not a suggestion
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Sinners Prayer:
Father God, I give you my life
I give you my heart, I give you my all
I repent today for my past
I thank you my sins are forgiven
I believe in Jesus and that he died on the cross and rose again
I make you the Lord and Savior of my life
I love you God
In Jesus name amen
Communion:
1 Corinthians 11:28–32 NKJV
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
It Costs me my blood
1 Corinthians 11:23–25 NKJV
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
