Good Morning Church!
Good Morning Church!
Bibles out, Philippians 3.
Continuing our study in Philippians…
A lot to cover today…Going to jump right in…
Paul has been giving the church in Philippi instruction on how to live a life worthy of the gospel…
How we are supposed to live…our responsibility as the body of Christ…
But as we transition into chapter 3…Paul is going to move our focus from our own actions, what we are doing, how we are walking…
And bring our focus back to what Jesus did…and how he walked…
As we begin I want to draw our attention to V1
V1 is the key verse…
We see “rejoice in the Lord” rejoice means to be happy/ to experience joy
We also see “to write the same things to you is no trouble for me and is safe for you” safe means its FIRM AND CONFIRMING
Paul says “Im going to repeat myself…and its good for you, its going to be confirming for you…”
He is saying…Im going to REMIND you of a few key things…
Paul planted the church in Philippi…He taught there…gave them the gospel and how to live in a manner worthy of it…
What he is telling them here is that he is about to remind them of the things he taught them in person….but these reminders will be good for them…and confirm the way they need to live…
And ultimately… It will lead them to REJOICE in the Lord…
We are first going to focus on what Paul is reminding both the church in Philippi and us today of…
In the text Paul is going to give us 3 reminders (things we already know) that will lead us to rejoicing in Jesus!
READ VERSES 1-11
Remember…Who to BEWARE of. (v2,4-6)
Remember…Who to BEWARE of. (v2,4-6)
This seems odd right? He tells us he is going to remind us of a few things that are going to lead us to be joyful…
BUT then tells us to beware…
He is going to clear this up…stick with me here…
3 things to beware of…
The Dogs
In this context…dogs were not pets…In this time period…dogs in the city were ferrel…
They were seen as dirty and dangerous and they wandered around in packs and got into places they didn’t belong
Paul is using this term to describe a type of people…impure and dangerous
The Evil doers
People who are out to do evil
Mutilators of the flesh/ The Concision (KJV)
All 3 of these traits describe one type of person...A JUDAIZER
Paul mentions these people in almost ever epistle…false teachers who spread a false gospel…
These were Jews that had worked their way into the first churches and taught both faith in Jesus and the adhering to the Jewish law are needed for salvation
In this region they were teaching a JESUS PLUS GOSPEL!!
Here was their gospel…”You must place your faith in Jesus…AND follow the law of moses to be saved”
There push was primarily on circumcision…
Since a bulk of these new churches were gentile…the Judaizers wanted all the new converts to be circumcised…
Paul gathered together with church leaders (Jerusalem Council )
Acts 15:1 “But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.””
Acts 15:1 “But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.””
The False Teaching: Jesus plus your works in the flesh gives you confidence in your salvation
They wandered into the churches…to promote evil and disunity in the gospel…and were leading in a Jesus plus works Salvation
Teaching people to put their confidence NOT in Jesus alone but also in themselves…
Paul says these people are in the churches to BEWARE of them…
YOU might be saying to yourself…Ive never seen a Judaizer…
BUT YOU HAVE…MANY FALSE TEACHERS ARE IN THE CHURCH TODAY
Telling you that you must conform to a religious system…a set of physical acts in the flesh to be rescued from sin and death…
They ask you (a lot of times in the name of Jesus) to do these acts and that if you do them you will be saved!
They tell you to place your confidence in your own flesh…
BUT LOOK WHAT PAUL SAYS IN VERSES 4-6…
If anyone should have confidence in the flesh its Paul!
Look at his accolades:
circumcised
tribe of Benjamin (Small but mighty tribe…King Saul, Mordecai, Queen Esther, Now Paul)
Hebrew of Hebrews (top follower of the Law, highly respected)
When it came to following the law…Paul says I did it at a high caliber
Zealous
Persecutor of the church…standing firm in the law…No Jewish hypocrite
If anyone were to have confidence in the acts of the flesh it should be me…
But as we continue on in the text…Paul says “I DON’T EVEN HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH”
Jump down to verses 7 and 8 with me…
ALL OF MY ACTS OF THE FLESH WERE THROWN AWAY…
THEY DON’T MATTER…
ALL THAT MATTERS IS “KNOWING CHRIST JESUS AS LORD”
All those accolades Paul mentioned (the true blooded Jew, circumcised on the 8th day, tribe of Benjamin, Hebrew of Hebrews)
Paul calls them rubbish (garbage)…and that ESV translation is a lot more pleasant…
The KJV uses the word DUNG…
Paul says my works in the flesh are a pile of dung…
They werent good enough…Jesus came and showed me what good enough was…
MY WORKS WERE NOTHING COMPARED TO HIS!!!
NOW my identity isnt circumcision…it isnt in my flesh
Next Paul says…
Remember…Who YOU are. (v3,7-8)
Remember…Who YOU are. (v3,7-8)
He says…
The Circumcision
The “new” circumcision is that of the heart...The old has died and the new has come…
Jesus removed sin and death…and fulfilled the burden of the law for us
Before Christ…Circumcision was needed to be apart of Gods family…
NOW faith is all you need!!!
The Worshippers
Worship God in the spirit
Everything we do now is in the Spirit…God inside of us!!!
The Rejoicers/ Glory in Christ
Rejoicers in Christ…
We dont Glorify our own works… but Christs works
The Self-Insecure
We place no confidence in our flesh…in the works of our flesh…in how good of a person we are…in how good of a christian we are…in how often we attend church, in any religious acts or rituals we do…in our sacrifices….
Paul says thats NOT where our confidence is…
Our confidence is in the last thing that he is telling us to remember…
Remember…What Jesus did! (v9-11)
Remember…What Jesus did! (v9-11)
HE JUSTIFIED YOU (v9)
A work that is done
“It is FINISHED”
Acts 15:6–11 “The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.””

HE SANCTIFIES YOU (v10)
A work that is ongoing
May know him ( how do we do that?)
through his word
Know the power of His resurrection (new creation living)
share in his sufferings….
becoming like him…dying to my flesh…living in the spirit
making me more Christlike
HE WILL GLORIFY YOU (V11)
By any means possible I may attain…
The resurrection of the dead is coming…
Bible tells us that those who are sons and daughter will be glorified with Jesus!
An inheritance that is coming!
1 Peter 1:3–6 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,”

We rejoice in the fact that a day is coming where we will be glorified with Jesus….and not because of our works but His finished work!
As Christ followers in the Church today we are to…
