Learning from a faithless nation

we have just finished up going through the life of Jacob
we saw how Jacob was given the blessing that passed down from
abraham to Isaac and then to him
we have seen how he was a liar and deciever when he tricked his father Isaac into giving him the blessing that was meant for the first born
We have seen How God chose Jacob
and how He revealed himself to Jacob throughout his life…
we have journeyed with Jacob to padan aram
we have seen angles ascending aND DESCENDING AT Bethel
we have seen Jacob work 14 years for 2 wives
and how he was mistreated and opressed by his uncle in padan aram
we then saw howw God called him to leave there and go back to the promise land of cannan
thrugh that journey back we saw how God wrestled with Jacob and how he protected Jacob
ultimately we see How God renamed him Israel
and God used Israel to bring about 12 sons
who would become the 12 tribes of Israel
this book is about the begining of creation
and the beggining of redemptive history
God creates
man sins
God begins the story of redemptive history
and God used the patriarchs.…
the family of Abraham to create a nation
that was holy and seperate from the rest of the world
and from that nation
would come the savior of the world… Jesus
we are going to move on from the patriarchs
and into the next main character of Genesis
Joseph
but before that we need to tie up a loose end
what did God do with Jacobs brother Esau…
God used Jacob to bring about the nation of Israel…
but what about Esau
Genesis 36:1–5 NKJV
Now this is the genealogy of Esau, who is Edom. Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite; Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; and Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth. Now Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel. And Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
q. What is the first thing we see wrong with these verses
he took wives from Canan

Take a spouse from the body of Christ

this was a big deal even to Abraham
when he asked his servant to find a wife for his son
Genesis 24:37 NKJV
Now my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
we should heed this same warning when it comes to dating.
dont date someone who is not solid in their faith
they will not have the same values..…
What if i was married to a woman who didnt want to take my kids to church
she leads your kids into new age spirituality
she is not intrested in the things of the Lord .…
Q. Why should we not look for a spouse outside of our faith?
Q. What problems could arise if you were to do so ..
q. What is Gods goal for marriage ?
glorify Him
Genesis 1:26–28 NKJV
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
God makes male and female in His image —-
think how we are different than animals
then he tells the married couple to have babies
rule over the earth
and excersise authority over the creation He has given us
were meant to do that with our spouse and
be image bearers of Him .…
Q. How could you do that with a spouse from another religion
Story of sharing the gospel with jew… his wife catholic...
I started going in on the old testemant … He goes I dont really know what the bible says …
Their relationship does not glorify God…
and what a tragedy that would be for you to be married to someone who is against your God…
furthermore … your marriage is meant to be a work for the lord
raising babies, serving in church, teaching, preaching , and sharing the love of Christ..…
you can see where Esaus motives were
He was unspiritual
Genesis 36:6–8 NKJV
Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob. For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock. So Esau dwelt in Mount Seir. Esau is Edom.
We see here that Esau was greatlt blessed financially, as well as Jacob
and they needed to split up.…
Esau goes to mount seir
this is where the rock city of petra is
SE of the dead sea
Esau was the father of the nation of edom
this nation was prophesied when he was in the womb ..
he was a great nation, but a faithless one..
this nation was prophesied against by jeremiah and ezekiel
Jeremiah 49:17–19 NKJV
“Edom also shall be an astonishment; Everyone who goes by it will be astonished And will hiss at all its plagues. As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah And their neighbors,” says the Lord, “No one shall remain there, Nor shall a son of man dwell in it. “Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the floodplain of the Jordan Against the dwelling place of the strong; But I will suddenly make him run away from her. And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her? For who is like Me? Who will arraign Me? And who is that shepherd Who will withstand Me?”
God blessed Esau with many descendants
as the rest of the chapter reads about all of the chiefs and sons and kings....
showing us that even unfaithful and wicked nations can recieve the blessings
of material things but they will never recieve the spiritual blessings that
come with knowing God…

trust in spiritual blessing over material

guys
Esau looked blessed from a worldly point
but he didnt know or obey God
there is amazing blessing in knowing and obeying God
Psalm 37:7–8 NKJV
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.
Q. do you ever get jealous over faithless people that prosper?
the material things of this world
what will happen to them
jesus said this
Matthew 6:19–20 NKJV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
the treasure in heaven is where the peace is
and most of all where eternity is
go the way of eternal life…
that is the treasure
JEsus Himself!!!
the kingdom of God is like a pearl of great price
it is better to sell out for that pearl
than to save up for worldly things..
also note ,
Psalm 2:1 NKJV
Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?
Edom is like most all of the nations…
are there any christian nations?
let us not follow the way of esau
but the way of Jacob
the way of God
for humanity is vast…
there are many people
and you will either be found like jacob or esau
Malachi 1:1–3 NKJV
The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved; But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.”
Jacob had faith in God
Esau did not
there is a love from God that leads to salvation for people who know God, Love God , and obey God
let us learn from the wicked nation Edom
to prioritize a christian family
and to trust in spiritual blessing more than physical blessing
that we may be reminded
to have faith in God like Jacob
and not like Esau
lets pray
