Psalm 63:1–11 (KJV 1900)
1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, My flesh longeth for thee In a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
2 To see thy power and thy glory, So as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; And my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
6 When I remember thee upon my bed, And meditate on thee in the night watches.
7 Because thou hast been my help, Therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
8 My soul followeth hard after thee: Thy right hand upholdeth me.
9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall fall by the sword: They shall be a portion for foxes.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God; Every one that sweareth by him shall glory: But the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

“ The Promises of Putting God First “
Psalms 84 and 11 says
Psalm 84:11 (ESV)
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
There are some Promises of God
That comes along with Salvation
But there are some Promises
For the believer
That are Conditional — You have to do something to get the Promise
Because David
Put God first
He had
Past Promises — Present Promises — Future Promises
In Psalm 63 David did 3 things while he was in the wilderness of Judah
I. How David Longed For God
II. How David Lived For God
III. How David Looked For God
I. How David Longed For God
A. Where He Was
Psalm 63:1 KJV 1900
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, My flesh longeth for thee In a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
His whole soul thirsted for God.
In this desolate scenery
which surrounded him
only served to accent his thirst.
He describes it as
“a dry and thirsty land”
or, as some render it,
“a dry and weary land.”
Which, of course,
is exactly
what this world should be to us
Dry and Weary land
A. Where He Was
B. What He Wanted
Psalm 63:2 KJV 1900
To see thy power and thy glory, So as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
There was a band
Of faithfully Levites
That was carrying the ark of the covenant
To go meet David
In 2 Samuel 15:24-29
Because David was on the run
They have succeeded
Of getting out of Jerusalem
With the ark of the covenant
And when they get to David
they cried, “all is well!
We have brought the ark!”
The ark was the visible,
tangible token
of the presence of God’s glory
and power among His people.
But what did David do?
He sent it back!
He thanked his friends
for their kindness and concern,
but he sent them back
with the ark to Jerusalem.
To send back that ark
was a sign
of an extraordinary degree of faith
on David’s part.
David was no slave to superstition.
He Knew that no sacred object,
no matter how holy its associations,
could avail him in his hour of need.
What he needed was God,
not the ark.
He was so sure
of God’s presence and protection
that he could afford
to depart with the ark
He had the substance
so why retain the shadow?
David wants God’s PRESENCE
A. Where He Was — The Wilderness
B. What He Wanted — The Presence
C. Why He Worshiped — His Lovingkindness
Psalm 63:3 KJV 1900
Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise thee.
“ His Lovingkindness “
It is a favorite word in the psalms. God offers us not just kindness, but lovingkindness; not just mercy, but tender mercy
I. How David Longed For God
II. How David Lived For God
A. He Worked For God
B. He Witnessed To God
C. He Waited for God
D. He Walked with God
I. How David Longed For God
II. How David Lived For God
III. How David Looked For God
David can see that his foes ( enemy ) will be :
A. Doomed
B. Defeated
C. Devoured
A. Doomed
Psalm 63:9 (KJV 1900)
9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
“ The lower parts of the earth “
SHEOL is the first old testament Hebrew word
SHEOL
Which was the general Word that was used throughout the Old Testament
To refer to the basic general place
We’re both the righteous and the unrighteous went
So because of that, it is better translated as the
The Grave —— SHEOL
Rather than HELL because both the righteous and the unrighteous went there
B. Defeated
Psalm 63:10 (KJV 1900)
10 They shall fall by the sword: They shall be a portion for foxes.
C. Devoured
Psalm 63:10 (KJV 1900)
10 They shall fall by the sword: They shall be a portion for foxes.
Statement: You don’t ever and should not ever pray against your enemies or the ones that oppose the work of God because God WILL take care of them personally
MUD verses DIRT
When people throw mud at us, it is best not to try to brush it off; we only spread it around and rub it in. We must let time do its work. In time the mud will all brush off. God will see to that.
1st. David conveys his love for God
Possession
Priority
Passion
2nd. David commits his life to God
A. He Worked For God
B. He Witnessed To God
C. He Waited for God
D. He Walked with God
3rd. David continues to lean on God
Now David
continues to lean on God
In spite of his Place
Which was the wilderness
But he also
Continues to lean on God
In spite of People
3 reasons why David was leaning on God
1st. David is leaning on God's Past Power ( V. 7 )
2nd. David is leaning on God's Promised Power ( V. 9 )
3rd. David is leaning on God’s Prophetic Power ( V. 11 )
1st. David is leaning on God's Past Power ( V. 7 )
Psalm 63:7 (KJV 1900) 7 Because thou hast been my help, Therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
When you’re in your dry place
You have to remember what God has already done
You’ve SEEN to much from God
You’ve HEARD to much from God
You’ve FELTED to much from God
1st. David is leaning on God's Past Power ( V. 7 )
2nd. David is leaning on God's Promised Power ( V. 9 )
Psalm 63:9 (KJV 1900) 9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
David is believing God to fight his battles
You need 4 things for God to fight your Battles
Faith
The Word
Stand Still
Exodus 14:12 KJV 1900
Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
Peace
1st. David is leaning on God's Past Power ( V. 7 )
2nd. David is leaning on God's Promised Power ( V. 9 )
3rd. David is leaning on God's Prophetic Power ( 11 )
Psalm 63:11 (KJV 1900) 11 But the king shall rejoice in God; Every one that sweareth by him shall glory: But the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
When David says the King
David is not talking about Absalom
David is talking about himself
Absalom is seating on the throne
David is in the wilderness
But he calls himself the King
David is not defining himself by things
David is not defining himself by where he lives
But David is defining himself by God’s word
That he is the King
David knew that the wilderness
Wasn’t his final Destination
