Eternal Security – What is at Stake?
Assurance I John 5:13
Forgiveness
Which of your sins were future at the cross? All
Faith alone
No room for boasting in Heaven
(Unconditional) Love
If there is a condition – even just one – attached to God’s willingness to maintain a relationship with His children then it is not unconditional
(Avoiding the traps of) Legalism
Self-deception , pride
Focus on Christ
Phil 4:8, Col 3:3, Heb 12:1-2
“It may be that the Deity can forgive sins, but I do not see how” Socrates to Plato 500BC
GUILT REMOVAL
Only 3 options open to God as sinners stand in His courtroom
1. He must condemn them
2. Compromise His own righteousness to receive them just the way they are
3. He can change them into righteous people
If He can exercise the third option, then He can announce them righteous, which is justification
Dr. Charles C. Ryrie, Basic Theology
IMPUTATION - II Corinthians 5:21
Became sin for us on the cross - Mark 15:33-34
Isaiah 53:10-11, Hebrews 9:11-12, John 1:11-13, Romans 4:5-8, Romans 5:1,
Colossians 2:13-14, legal process for debt cancellation certificate – testelestai! John 19:30
Romans 3:26-28
I have been saved justification
I am being saved sanctification
I will be saved glorification
Dr. Earl Rademacher
THE PARADIGM OF SALVATION
Justification past tense
The gift from God of everlasting life received by faith alone in Christ alone
John3:18, 5:24, Ephesians 2:5,8
Separation from the PENALTY of Sin
Sanctification present tense
A work in progress that involves the faith and the works of the believer
Separation from the POWER of sin
Glorification future tense
The result of the previous aspects
All believers will be glorified (resurrected & given a body like Christ) but some will have more glory (rewards) than others
Separation from the PRESENCE of sin
Justification is FOR us
Sanctification is IN us
Justification DECLARES sinners righteous
Sanctification MAKES sinner righteous
Justification removes GUILT & PENALTY of sin
Sanctification removes GROWTH & POWER of sin
Can you lose your salvation?
YES! If it depends on you!!
The Arminian denies that the true child of God is eternally secure
The Calvinist insists that if he does not persevere in holiness he was never regenerate in the first place
After 400 years of doctrinal disputes with outstanding scholars on both sides of this issue it appears to be the result of a failure to adequately distinguish between justification and the possibility of several different inheritances
Overcomers are eternally secure with the distinction between ENTERING and INHERITING –
Variation of rewards
Hebrews 3:14 – partakers “metochoi” one who shares in, companion, comrade, partner in a work, office or dignity “IF”
Partaker is “obligated” to persevere Romans 8:12
But if he does not,
he does not forfeit salvation but faces divine discipline in time,
and the loss of reward at the Judgment Seat of Christ II Cor 5:10
All three persons of the Godhead have a share in preserving to fruition that which God has determined
The Basis of our Eternal Security depends on The Father, The Son, & The Holy Spirit
THE FATHER
His Sovereign Purpose
Eternal purpose is declared Eph 1:11-12
Anchored within the veil, by oath Heb 6:17-20
His Sovereign Promise
Salvation depends on His promise, not our faithfulness
It is of faith (nothing on man’s part)
That it might be by grace (all on God’s part)
To the end the promise might be sure - Romans 4:16
If it depended at any point on us the promise is not secure
The promise is confirmed
Genesis 15:6, John 3:16, Acts 16:33, Romans 4:23-24
His Infinite Power
He is now free to save us
Christ’s death has rendered God free to save us in spite of moral imperfection
Not on our moral worthiness
Christ is the propitiation for our sins I John 2:2
To assume there is some sin sufficiently serious which causes us to forfeit our salvation
Is to assume that we were less worthy of salvation after having committed this sin than before
And reduces salvation down to human ability to merit it
He has purposed to keep us saved Jn 6:37-40, 10:28-29 (2 hands!) never perish- emphasis
We are in God’s hands, not ours!
His “Much More” Love - Romans 5:6-10
God knew when he saves us that we were totally depraved and therefore any new manifestation of sin in our lives after our conversion cannot be any motivation to God to change His mind and withdraw His grace and His salvation Romans 11:29, 8:32, 38-39
He saved us for reasons independent of us and outside of us
He was motivated by His electing love and not by observation of any good in the sinner (none righteous, no not one!)
His Answer to the Prayer of His Son
Believers are called:
Saints, believers, elect, sheep, partakers, etc
Dearest of Jesus? “Those whom Thou has given me” John 17:2,6,9,11,12,24,
7 times in John 17:11,12, 15, 20, 24
Father always answers the prayer of the Son John 11:42
A CHAIN OF 5 LINKS - Romans 8:29-30
God’s sovereign purpose exemplified in these 2 verses
Uncertainty about election can arise from some kind of self-righteousness with its roots in pride
This eternal choice & foreknowledge involves more than establishing a relationship between God and believers. It involves the certainty of our sanctification - Romans 8:29
1. Foreknowledge God’s Knowledge
2. Predestinate Abraham
3. Called Isaac (Genesis 21:12, Hebrews 11:18, Romans 9:7)
4. Justified Jacob
5. Glorified Joseph
The process starts with FOREKNOWLEDGE – Brought into God’s eternal plan by divine foreknowledge and choice is predestined – predetermined Ephesians 1:11
PREDESTINED – planned in advance Ephesians 1:4-6
CALLED - the call to come to Him John 10:27, Romans 1:6, 8:28
JUSTIFIED – declared righteous Romans 5:1, 3:24, 28, 4:2, 5:1, 9
GLORIFIED – Those he also Romans 8:30, 3:23, 8:17, Col 1:27, 3:4
A clear statement of the eternal security of the saints
FOREKNOWLEDGE - “proginosko”
ELECTION – “eklegomai”
PREDESTINATION – “proorizo”
DESTINY
Foreknowledge determines Election
Predestination brings to pass the Election
Election looks back to Foreknowledge
Predestination looks forward to Destiny
DIVINE ELECTION
Corporate
Israel Isaiah 45
Church Ephesians 1:4
INDIVIDUAL
According to the foreknowledge of God I Peter 1:2
Wholly of grace, not of human merit Romans 9:11, 11:5,6
Whereby certain are chosen for himself John 15:19
Or for distinctive service Luke 6:13, Acts 9:15, I Cor 1:27,28
Predestination has to do with God’s purpose with His people; it refers only to those who are saved
Election People of God
Predestination Purposes of God
GOD THE SON
Romans 8:34
Jesus is God’s appointed judge John 5:22, 27 Acts 17:31
Jesus is whom the believer has trusted for salvation
He is the One who died, raised from the dead, and at the right hand of God the Father
Luke 22:69, Acts 2:33, 5:31, Eph 1:20, Col 3:1, Heb 1:3, 13, 8:1, 10:12, 12:2, I Pet 3:22
He is also presently interceding for us
Who is he that condemns? 4 Answers given, each taught elsewhere but all listed here
1. Christ died
2. He is risen
3. He advocates
4. He intercedes
If God has already justified the man who believes in Jesus how can He lay anything to the charge of His already justified one? Romans 8:26, 30
His justification comes from the imputed righteousness of Christ and is legally ours
It is not a subject of merit, and cannot be lost by demerit
Like a father, God can and does correct His earthly sons, but they always remain sons
Prodigal Son Luke 15:24
1 . Upon His Substitutionary Death Romans 5:8, 8:34
Who can condemn us if the penalty has already been paid?
Greatest proof of eternal security is justification by faith
Justification refers to how God sees us, and no one else
It is entirely a legal matter Col 2:14
This redemption is eternal Heb 9:12
And once for all Heb 10:12, 14
2. Upon His Substitutionary Life Rom 5:9-10, 19, 10:4, Col 2:20
3. Upon His Present Session; Advocate & Intercessor Heb 9:24
Saves to the uttermost Heb 7:23-25
Arminians fear this doctrine will tend toward sin
John says that it is a motivation not to sin I John 2: 1-2
Hebrews 7:23-25 II Timothy 1:12 (He is able)
HOLY SPIRIT
Ministry of Regeneration Titus 3, 5, II Cor 5:17, Eph 2:10
Baptizing Ministry Romans 6:3, 8-11, I Cor 12:13
Sealing Ministry II Cor 1:22, Eph 1:13-14, Eph 4:30
Jesus sealed in the tomb Mt 27:66
Satan sealed in abyss 1000 years Rev 20:3
Several books sealed Dan 12:4, Rev 6
144,000 sealed Rev 7 9:4
If one person who was born again in Christ ever fails to enter into heaven when he dies
Then God will have broken His pledge
No conditions are mentioned
It is a work of God and depends upon Him alone
II Corinthians 1:22 sealing – “sphragizo” to set a seal of protection and ownership - Mt 27:66
Earnest “arrabon” a legal concept, a pledge, a first installment with which a man secures a legal claim upon a thing as yet unconsummated
A down payment: deposit: pledge
An evidence of good faith; obligating the party to consummate the commitment involved Gen 38:17
The Holy Spirit is designated as a down payment, a “first fruits” to be followed by more Rom 8:23
II Cor 1:22 - sealed earnest
Ephesians 1:13-14 - sealed with the Holy Spirit, earnest of our inheritance
Ephesians 4:30
Sealing “sphragizo” to set a seal of protection and ownership (also used a a boundary marker)
When the Holy Spirit seals, it is with the signet ring of the Father on our hearts. He leaves His mark of ownership. For how long? Is it just temporary?
Seal unto the day of redemption
A broken seal is an indication that the protection wasn’t adequate
Can you break the seal? Can Satan?
KEY TERMS
Justification
Imputation
Predestination
Sealing
Adoption
More than simply acquittal
Forgiveness implies the restoration of a relationship
Romans 8:15-16 received the Spirit of adoption
From the Judge’s courtroom to His family room
Galatians 4:4-6 the adoption of sons
This was His goal from the very beginning
Ephesians 1: 4-7 He chose us in Him…before foundation of the world
Predestined us to adoption
Once a Son, always a Son
The Prodigal Son Luke 15:11-32
Squandered his inheritance
But the father’s love & acceptance was not contingent on the son’s works
He never lost his sonship
Romans 8:15-17 if we suffer with Him
Most Christians when they get to heaven will be disappointed
I Corinthians 9:27 castaway
What was Paul afraid of?
Not of losing salvation. He wrote Romans 8:28-39
Judgment seat, loss of rewards
II Corinthians 5:10 the bema seat
I Corinthians 3:11-15
Gold, silver, precious stones Inflamable
Wood, hay, stubble flammable
Every man’s work – work is judged, not the man!
Revealed by fire…fire shall try
He himself shall be saved
Hebrews 3:14 partakers IF
REWARDS FOR FAITHFULNESS
Some entrusted with special privileges
Some not I Cor 3:11-15
Some reign with Christ
Some not II Timothy 2:12, Rev 3:21
Some rich
Some poor Luke 12:21, 33 16:11
Some heavenly treasures of their own
Some not Luke 16:12
Behavior Matter!
Behavior will not save you, that is in Christ alone, but it does impact our rewards!

A PRIMARY RIDDLE
One of the primary challenges in the entire NT Hebrews 6:4-6
BOOK of HEBREWS - 5 Major Warnings
1. The Danger of Drifting Heb 2:1-4
2. Danger of Disobedience Heb 3:7-4:13
3. Progress toward Maturity Heb 5:11-6:20
a. Dull of hearing pitfalls Heb 5:11-14
b. (16 different views) Heb 6:4-8
4. Danger of willful Sin Heb 10:26-39
5. Warning Against Indifference Heb 12:25-29
UNITY of the 5 WARNINGS
All 5 warnings are a unit
They go together and complement each other
Each builds upon the other
Each intensifies until the 5th capstone
The writer relies heavily on Israel’s Exodus as an example (type) of individual Christians
The Exodus generation, a redeemed people, failed to heed God’s instruction and was judged (disinherited) for its disobedience.
All were written to believers
Do not represent any chance of loss to the past aspect of salvation: justification
The eternal security of the believer
The warnings admonish believers to press on and obtain all God has promised to the faithful Overcomer
The warnings represent the very real possibility of the loss of privileges or rewards offered to the believer, which will be revealed at the Judgment Seat of Christ.
What is at stake? What are these believers going to lose, forfeit, or suffer?
Not Salvation John 10:28,29
Rewards at the Judgment Seat of Christ
We cannot escape this by applying it to others
The burden of Hebrews is not the rescuing sinners from Hell: it is the bringing of sons to glory
The danger of a relapse and forfeiting their inheritance
HEBREWS 6:4-6
These were believers because
They were once enlightened
They tasted of the heavenly gift
They were partakers of the Holy Ghost
They have tasted the good word of God & powers of the coming age
CAN THESE READERS LOSE THEIR SALVATION???
How does this passage impact your views of Eternal Security
Examine Numbers 14 & Hebrews 6 (entire chapters)
Formulate your own analysis and its impact
16 different views
1. Professing but not real believers?
2. Truly saved then permanently lost?
3. “impossible” really means “difficult”???
4. Repetitive lost and resaved, to a limit?
5. Refers to OT sacrifices?
6. Purely hypothetical
And variations of each
Hebrews 6:4 is the beginning of one long sentence
The first three of five qualifiers - participles
Once enlightened regenerated, same word used in Heb 10:30
Tasted the heavenly gift a real experience Heb 2:9
Partakers of the Holy Ghost a real partaking “metochos” Heb 2:14, 3:1,14
6:5 two remaining qualifying participles
Have seen miracles and signs Hebrews 2:4
“world to come” aion – singular not plural, specifically: the Messianic Age
They have understood the glory that awaits Christ and his “metachoi” in the coming Millennial kingdom, but have turned to go back to the world.
They are in the same position as the Exodus generation at Kadesh-Barnea, refusing to go forward to fight for their inheritance
A participle is a form of a verb that is used to form complex tenses, such as “was loving” and “has loved” and may also be used as an adjective
Impossible “adunaton”
Were once enlightened
Have tasted of the heavenly gift
Made partakers of the Holy Ghost
Have tasted the good word of God & of the coming age
Each participle in aorist tense – a completed action, except that which describes coming age (meilontos)
Heb 6:6 repentance – “metanoia” a change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done
Fallen away – “parapesontas” aorist – completed action
Crucifying – “anastaurountas – present active, a continuing action
Publicly ridiculing – “paradeigmatizontas” – present active, a continuing action
Being restored by repentance – “anakainizein eis metancian”
GRAMMATICAL ANALYSIS
The impossibility continues during the present state of crucifying and the present state of ridiculing
The grammar of the passage connotes that the main verb of the sentence (ie the verb “to be”) and its descriptive aorist participles that modify it in verse Heb 6:4-5 are all limited and defined by the present tense of the participles in verse Heb 6:6
That is, the actions described by the aorist participles occur during the time of the crucifying to themselves and the public ridiculing.
After the person stops these two actions, at which time these behaviors become past tense activities as soon as they are ceased, the impossibility of renewal or restoration no longer applies, since they no longer are present tense activities relating to the word “impossible”.
Once these two present actions cease, the impossibility is removed. If the impossibility were described by the author as being permanent the two present tense participles would have to have been described with aorist participles.
However the author uses the present tense thus giving hope to those who might otherwise be hopeless.
If the author had used aorist participles for the verbs “crucify” and “ridicule” anybody who fell away for a season could never be renewed to repentance.
In any case
The impossibility referred to is an impossibility to being restored to repentance, not to restore “salvation” (justification);
And the restoration to repentance is connoted by the verbs as occurring only during the time described by the two present tense participles
Numbers 13 & Numbers 14 is repeatedly referred to throughout the book of Hebrews
OUR IMMUTABLE GOD
The Israelites had angered God so thoroughly that He swore on His name they would not enter the Promised Land. God made up His mind, and He would not repent.
Num 14:16 “he swore” Num 14:20 “I have pardoned” Num 14:30 “I swore”
Hebrews 3:17-19 18 “he swore”
Numbers 14:39-40
They changed their mind – repented – but too late
But God did not change His
Therefore they suffered defeat when they attempted to enter the land
God is jealous about sharing His glory
Those to whom He shows great and mighty works and His glory should take heed
The impossibility of repentance in Hebrews 6:6 might be on God’s part, not the individual’s
Hebrews 12:16-17 Esau’s father couldn’t change his mind even though Esau did
Repentance – metanoia – a change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done Genesis 27:32-40
Hebrews 6:7-8 compare with I Cor 3:10-15 “to be burned”
Gold, silver, precious stone inflammable
Wood, hay, stubble flammable
“the fire shall try it”
Not salvation but rewards, the work is being tested, not the man
I Corinthians 3:15 They are believers, their justification is not at issue
Judgment not mercy will emanate from the Bema seat, with a just recompense of reward for works- positive and negative as appropriate
Matt 18:23-35, 24:42-51, 25:14-30, Mark 8:34-38, Luke 12:1-12, 41-48, 19:11-27
Heb 6:9-10 Behavior matters “accompany salvation”
Believers who press on to maturity receive God’s blessing of rewards for the Messianic Kingdom because they have lived a useful life for the Lord
Heb 6:11-12 inherit the promises
Difference between entering heaven and inheriting heaven
Which promises were optional
Heb 6:13-15
He could swear by no greater
Abraham exercised 25 years of patient endurance to obtain the promise of Isaac
Heb 6:16-17
Confirmed by an oath
The oath renders it immutable- unchangeable: not open to “repentance”
Heb 6:18,19
When Abraham was 75 YOA God promised him a son. The promise contained the content of the covenant Genesis 12
The promise with an oath was given when Abraham was 99 YOA Genesis 17
Heb 6:20
By mentioning the order of Melchizedek the author picks up where he left off in Hebrews 5:10
Earlier he told his readers why they might not be able to understand these difficult truths
Hebrews 5:11-14
Having again encouraged them to press on to maturity, he is now ready to expound on the Melchizedekian Order
Hebrews 7:21 “The Lord swore and will not repent”
Contrasting the Aaronic priests with the Kingdom everlasting Priest
Again, swearing an oath forecloses any opportunity to “repent” to change His mind
THE GOAL OF OUR SECURITY
The resurrected and glorified Lord Jesus Christ will become the Head of a new race of humanity
Purified from all contact with sin and prepared to live eternally in His presence I Cor 15:42-49
It is astounding to realize that God’s plan of salvation for people is a program that reaches from eternity past to eternity future which God will carry out perfectly
Recognizing this we now encounter
THE ULTIMATE TOUR D’FORCE
Seven Questions of Romans 8:31-39
1 & 2 Can opposition defeat the Christian Rom 8:31
“if” – first class conditional means “since” not ambiguous, definitive
Obviously Satan & his demonic hosts are against us Eph 6:11-13, I Peter 5:8
But they cannot prevail & triumph over believers
God is the self-existent sovereign Creator
Since He is for believers, no one can oppose believers successfully
3 Will we have the resources? Rom 8:32
KJV & RV failed to translate the Greek participle “ge” to read “that EVEN spared not”
Spare “epheisato” is same word used in the LXX Genesis 22:12
Abraham never “withheld” his son Genesis 22:2-14
God offered His own Son, on that very spot, as the Sacrifice for sin John 1:29
Since God sacrificed His own Son, He will not hesitate to give believers all things pertaining and leading to their ultimate sanctification 2 Peter 1:3
4 Will our failures reverse our justification? Rom 8:33
Charge – “enkalesei” – make formal accusation in court: press charges
Acts 19:40, 23:29, 26:2
Satan is identified as “the accuser” of God’s people
Revelation 12:10, Zech 3:1
His accusations are valid, because they are based on the believer’s sinfulness and defilement
Satan’s accusations will be thrown out of court, because it is God who justifies
The accused person is righteous on the basis od his faith in Jesus Christ Rom 3:24, 5:1
Result all accusations are dismissed and no one can bring an accusation that will stand Rom 8:1
5 Can anyone condemn us for any reason Rom 8:34
Jesus is God’s appointed Judge John 5:22, 27, Acts 17:31
Jesus is whom the believer has trusted for salvation. Furthermore, He is the One who died – more than that, who was raised to life – who is at the right hand of God.
Luke 22:69, Acts 2:33, 5:31, Eph 1:20, Col 3:1, Heb 1:3,13 8:1, 10:12, 12:2, I Pet 3:22
And is also interceding for us
Having justified the ungodly Romans 4:5
God will not and cannot contradict Himself by charging them with evil
“Who is he that condemneth?” Romans 8:34
Paul gives 4 answers, each of which are taught elsewhere in Scripture but are gathered here to underscore the unconditional security of the believer
1. Christ died
2. He is risen
3. He advocates
4. He intercedes
If God has already justified the man who believes in Jesus, how can He lay anything to the charge of His already justified one? Romans 8:26, 30
His justification comes from the imputed righteousness of Christ and is legally ours!
It is not a subject of merit and cannot be lost by demerit
Like a father, God can and does correct His earthly sons, but they always remain sons
Luke 15:24 (The Prodigal Son)
6 & 7 What kind of assurance can we have of victory? Romans 8:35
The apostle suggested 7 setbacks a believer might experience
Paul experienced all of them II Cor 11:23-28
Tribulation “thilpsis” pressure or distress mentioned frequently by Paul in II Corinthians
Distress “stenochoria” literally narrowness, being pressed in, hemmed in, crowded
Persecution “diogmos” chased, pursued (10 xin NT, always in reference to the gospel)
Famine “limos” 12 x in NT The God of Elijah looks after His own
Nakedness “gumnotes” I Corinthians 4:11
Peril “kindunos” jeopardy, danger, 8 x in one verse II Cor 11:26, I Cor 15:30
Sword – The world hates the saints
In all these adversities, Romans 8:36-37, more than conquerors Romans 8:28,32,37
Rather than being separated from Christ’s love, believers are more than conquerors (present tense, “keep on being conquerors to a greater degree” or “keep on winning a glorious victory”) through Him who loves us.
Final guarantee Romans 8:38-39
Angels, Principalities, Powers of Darkness…what else is there?
This should really re-prioritize our outlook on everything!
I Corinthians 9:27 What was Paul afraid of?
Losing his rewards! II Corinthians 5:10
Hebrews 3:14 – partakers “metochoi” one who shares in, companion, comrade, partner (in a work, office or dignity)
Revisit the REWARDS FOR FAITHFULNESS and CAVEATS (page 10)
Entering vs Inheriting
An invitation to my home allows you to enter it but not to rearrange the furniture
You can enter a hotel but that doesn’t mean you inherit it
Inheritance (privileges) will be widely variable, as rewards
Two kinds of inheritance “kleronomia”
1. An inheritance by birth; heir by sonship: a gift Eph 1:11,14
2. A conditional earned reward Col 3:24
a. OT Dt 6:18, 19:9-10, 11:22-23
b. NT Mt 24:43, 47 II Tim 2:12, James 2:5, Heb 10:35
CHAIN OF INHERITANCE - Sanctification
Which leads to Partaking
Which leads to Overcoming
Which leads to Inheriting Hebrews 3:14
INHERITANCE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
Inheritance came to the firstborn son by virtue of his birth
Whether he actually secured it depended upon his obedience & the father’s choice
Subject to conditions and obedience
Abrahamic inheritance based on Divine oath Gen 12:7, 15:18-21, 26, 3, 28:13, Ex 6:8
Conditioned on obedience Deut 19:8-10
INHERITANCES FORFEITED
Land of Caanan
Inheritance Dt 15:4, 19:14, 25:19, 26:1
Merited by obedience Ex 23:30, Dt 2:31,11:11-24, 16:20, 19:8-9, Josh 11:23, 1:6-7
Exodus Generation, promised an inheritance, but failed to obtain it at Kadesh-Barnea Num 13
Israel was God’s “firstborn son” Ex 4:22-23
Only 2 adults over 20 from 2 million took possession of their inheritance
Even Moses was excluded due to his disobedience Deut 4:41,22
Esau sold his inheritance for a bowl of pottage Gen 25:29-34
Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn I Chron 5:1-2
David warns Solomon I Chron 28:8
Generation of Israelites enslaved to Babylon Lamentations 5:2
INHERITANCES MERITED
Abraham Genesis 17:14
Caleb Numbers 14:24
Joshua Joshua 14:8,9
THE SECOND BEFORE THE FIRST
Not Cain, but Abel (and Seth)
Not Japeth but Shem
Not Ishmael but Isaac
Not Esau but Jacob
Not Manasseh but Ephraim
Not Aaron but Moses
Not Eliab but David
Not the Old Covenant but the New
Not the First Adam, but the Last Adam (Jesus)
Hebrews 4:11
Firstborn Status
Headship of the family
Priesthood of the family
Double-portion of the inheritance
Blessing forfeited Genesis 27:30-40
Esau Hebrews 12:16-17 He seeks his father’s repentance Hebrews 4:11
