Psalms and Job
After reading the book of Job the psalms following nicely along to give words to the utter devestation of his torment. The falling action, hitting rock bottom, and the rising again is worded in the same way the psalms are. As every good thing was taken from Job and he lamented, even his friends and wife persecuted him and told him to curse God. But in the greatest humility was fully aware of God’s presence and blest God all the same confident that He would be saved. It makes sense that these Psalms were memorized by the Israelites during the time of exile as they also desired to follow this path.
The Psalms in their falling action of lament, and humbling to recognize one’s own faults, personal weakness and sins against God. And then when the psalmist is at their lowest they are even more fully aware of God’s presence, and that he is not a silent far off God but real and ever present in this time of turmoil.
The psalmist is then reinvigorated with God’s consistent promise to the faithful. There is then the rising action of the psalmist to praise God and thank him in expectation of his future blessing and the desire to offer Him thanksgiving and praise.
Proverbs 8
Lead to see Wisdom as created before all things and sertved her role in guiding creation
This was paticular interesting to me this week as in another course we learned of the trancendental nature of Wisdom and how it is above humanity; for it to be part of it than wisdom to be part of man
This proverb brings forth that it was created before all other things
1 Maccabees
I found the story of the Maccabees unique in that it featured a unwillingness of the Jews to submit to the authority of their captors. They refused to be subjugated and to apostize from the God of Israel to foreign gods of Greece
As opposed to the captivity in Egypt and Babalyon as well as during the reign of kings; many false gods were worshipped and taken and other false practices were similarly included such as eating unclean animals
But this is the case where the sons of the high priest Mattathias chose to go on the offensive to his oppressors and drive them out of Jesursalem so to keep safe the temple and those that worship there.
2 Maccabees 6-7
Is is in these 2 chapters that many tradition and core doctrines in the Catholic faith are made evidently practiced in the Jewish culture
This is also proabbaly why Martin Luther sought to take them out
The sacrifice of teh scribe Eleazar and the Mother of seven leads to a moving display of what the prize of martyrdom. The final judgement, and the hope of the ressurection of the body and soul being reuinited.
This mother’s such faith in the belief of the ressurection of the body makes me wonder why their was such debate in the scriptures between the Pharasees and the Sadduccees.
