Built to Last: God’s Blueprint for Health
Built to Last: God’s Blueprint for Health
Hook:
Do you know what the most expensive building ever built was?
The original temple was built with extreme precision and with extreme wealth. (1 and 2 Chronicles)
100,000 talents of gold = $94 billion in today’s currency
1,000,000 talents of silver = $12.3 billion in today’s currency
Took 7 years to build
Daily maintenance rituals were put in place to maintain the temple.
Health: Caring for His temple (our bodies)
God wants to be glorified through our bodies, His dwelling place (temple).
Are you treating your body with the reverence the temple of God deserves?
Look: 4 impacts of God’s Blueprint for our Health:
1. Gives Glory to God
1. Gives Glory to God
Being good stewards of our health is a way to show love and gratitude to God for the body that He gave us.
Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything. You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies.
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
Our bodies are valuable because we were bought with a price and because they are the temple of the Holy Spirit
Imagine if Jesus himself was coming to live in your house for just one night...
He’s decided to make our bodies His temple. Amazing!!
Recap of God’s presence from Adam to now??
Big deal for God’s presence in you.
If we can glorify God with our bodies, we have the capacity to glorify other things as well:
Bad eating habits: over-eating, unhealthy eating/ drinking (energy drinks), eating disorders, etc.
Sexual immorality: any sexual activity outside the marriage covenant, Paul’s reference (no other sin..)
Smoking/ vaping:
listening to podcast of pastor whose dad died of lung cancer at 47 - the pastor was 15)
talking with guy at men’s retreat with stage 4 lung cancer (4 kids, grandkids…)
I don’t want to do any funerals for people in our church getting lung cancer!
“Jesus does not want me to do this”…took action by faith, He helped me
Drunkenness: not going to argue about drinking (I don’t drink), No reward, all risk
CDC reports nearly 200K people in America die of excessive alcohol use each year. That’s nearly 500 per day, 20 per hour.
Over-working (refusing to give your body proper rest/ sleep) weekly sabbath rest is necessary, decompress, de-stress, etc.
Using His temple to worship something else is idolatry.
Using our bodies to glorify things other than God is setting up an altar to a false idol using His very own temple.
2. Our transformation testifies to the World
2. Our transformation testifies to the World
This world’s norm: Yolo, “Do you”, complusive, over-indulgent: self-centered and lacks purpose
When we allow the Lord to change us in this
Lifestyle of self-denial, it is noticeable to the world.
It’s the mature thing: deny temporary gratification for long term gain, or deny little gratification for greater
Spiritually mature denies natural for eternal.
Example: fasting - noticeable, spiritual
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
The only way not to conform is through allowing the Lord to renew our minds.
Thoughts lead to actions (spirit —> mind —> body)
Walk by faith, not by sight...
Anytime we allow the Lord to transform us, it is a testimony to the world.
3. Builds Discipline to Live
3. Builds Discipline to Live
I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.
An athlete trains. We should do the same.
Meaningless game, how much more should we do for the kingdom?
Our purpose is so much greater!
Poverty, victim mentality (have no purpose, no value - so nothing matters...no hope)
Priorities: Putting Kingdom first affects other areas of our lives
Living by priorities starts with the first priority as building block (same as finances)
Starting well helps you do well in every other area.
The world needs you to have the energy and physical capacity to do everything He is calling you to do. PURPOSE!!
Keith Hodges - live long, preach the gospel
You need brothers and sisters to come alongside you with this. (make it fun!)
Two birds w/ one stone - walks w/ Rachel
4. Brings Blessing to our Future
4. Brings Blessing to our Future
God’s blueprint: Blessed abundantly.
See your generations and help lead them by example
May you live to enjoy your grandchildren. May Israel have peace!
(Kids’ Picture) — This has been my main motivation
Took:
We should value our health so we can enjoy this life to the fullest, we can glorify Him, and we can be more useful for His glory!
Vision: The healthier we are, the better example we are able to be to others and have the energy to be outward-focused toward them.
Do: Building temple took planning and execution
Set some goals for health and create a plan to act on it:
new habits,
accountability,
three steps
Let’s be a church that is Built to Last for God’s glory.
B-line for the cross!
1 Cor 6:19-20 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
God paid the highest price
For us to be born again, filled with His Spirit
Closing: Bridge into invitation for salvation.
“In a moment, I’m going to give you an opportunity...
Without God, we are destined for death and destruction.
That’s why He paid such a high price...
Invitation: Drawing the net (BELIEVE they’re getting saved!!) (Stand & come -or- Sit & raise hand??)
If you want to let God into your life to be your Savior and Lord...
“I want you to raise your hand high right where you are!”
Response: Push down the seed!
What can they DO as a response to solidify the message in their hearts?
Pray for direction, support to take next steps
Pray for deliverance & healing
