Introduction: Friends, we have seen God punish sin, like He must; give Israel confidence to obey Him in crossing the Jordan River; save a Canaanite woman, Rahab because she trusted the Lord (like He does now!). We skip ahead to see Israel in the land but they forgot God’s miraculous power and sin against the Lord by turning to other things over God!
Content and Explanation: Judges 4:1-4, 6-9, 15
Judges 4:1–4
Unlike today’s judges, these judges, including Deborah, were heroes that God raised up after the people cried out to the Lord during the punishment for their sin and God would use these heroes to save the Israelites bringing peace before the Israelites would sin again.
Look at the message that Deborah has for a specific man by the name of Barak.
Judges 4:6–9
Unfortunately, Barak puts a condition on his obedience to God’s faithful promises to defeat Israel’s enemies that cost Barak the honor of being known as the victor over Israel’s enemies.
Friends, notice next what the Lord does to the enemies of the Israelites!
Judges 4:15
Friends, the enemy runs away scared and defeated!
This army that was impossible for the Israelites to defeat is now fleeing like a scared chicken!
Application: Friends, we have seen God keep His promises and therefore we need to obey Him.
Unfortunately, friends, we saw how Barak put a condition on his obedience to the Lord.
It’s always wrong to put a condition on obedience because God deserves our obedience and our obedience demonstrates we love the Lord, 1 John 5:2.
Our obedience should be motivated by wanting to please the Lord instead of what we think we can get (Up Rules, Dum Dum; pouting).
Friends, believe on Jesus to save you from your sins to receive God’s Holy Spirit Who will empower you to want to obey the Lord because you love Him.
Friends, if you have believed on Jesus to save you, you can ask Him to forgive you when you put conditions on obedience and the Holy Spirit to empower you to obey the Lord out of love
To help us remember these truths, let’s reflect on our newest memory verse.
Scripture Memory - Proverbs 3:6 (2X)
