Having had our “Theme Week” last week, we are now going to turn our attention back to the series of lesson we have been looking at concerning “God’s Plan of Salvation.” If you are just now joining our study in this series, I encourage to go back to study the others as well, because each of the steps we have talked about are required for one to have their sins removed and be adopted into the family of God. Today, we are going to be focusing on the last step to follow in order to be saved and that is baptism. Now don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of controversy around baptism, but all of that controversy is based on what man desires rather than what God teaches. Let’s read just a few of the passages that make it very clear that baptism is required for salvation.
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 22:16 ESV
16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.
1 Peter 3:21 ESV
21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
Mark 16:16 ESV
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Galatians 3:27 ESV
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Now if baptism is required to have our sins forgiven, and it is according to Acts 2:38.
And if baptism is required to have our sins washed away, and it is according to Acts 22:16.
And if baptism saves us, and it does according to 1 Peter 3:21.
And if Jesus said we must be not “just believe” but also be baptised to be saved, and he does Mark 16:16.
And if the only way to get into Christ i.e., be saved is through baptism, and it is Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3.
Then why do so many say baptism has nothing to do with one becoming a Christian?
Simply, its because it goes against what they “want God to teach.” If anyone teaches baptism does not save they are going against the bible itself.
Now, the biggest reason man makes this mistake and then tries to argue against baptism is because of Ephesians 2:8-9.
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Clearly this teaches we are saved by grace, through faith, and not by works. And so people say, baptism is a work and thus we cannot be saved by works so baptism must not be a part of salvation.
Now, never mind that they are ignoring all those passages we just discussed or make up things to change their meanings, let’s look at this idea of “no works can lead to salvation.”
There is a problem with this in that Paul writes to the saved in Philippi in Philippians 2:12
Philippians 2:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
We also find Jesus teaching the Jews that belief in God is a work in John 6:28-29.
John 6:28–29 NKJV
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Jesus makes a very clear distinction between the “works of God” here such as belief in him and the works of merit that man does on their own. By that I mean no human can ever do “enough good” to earn salvation. They can never work hard enough to merit salvation. But, with God’s free gift of grace (Romans 6:23) we can and even must do the works of God to be saved.
This is what Jesus was getting at when he said in Matthew 7:21
Matthew 7:21 NKJV
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
Lastly, I find it interesting that all those that say baptism has nothing to do with salvation because it is a work don’t see the irony in such statements. With every step of salvation, “studying God’s word (Romans 10:17), belief and faith in God (Hebrews 11:6), repentance (Acts 17:30, counting the cost of discipleship (Luke 14:25-33), and confessing Jesus as Savior (Matthew 10:32-33; Romans 10:9-10) people have to “do something.” This is why Jesus calls belief in him a work of obedience there in John 6:29.
However, with baptism it is the only required step of salvation wherein someone else is do the work to you. When you get baptized, you don’t baptize yourself you have someone else do it. That means the person doing the baptism is working, the one being baptized is not working at all.
Don’t be fooled by those that ignore the plan teachings of God’s word for the twisted and perverse doctrines of man. No one can be saved without obeying the gospel (2 Thessalonians 1:8) which means being baptized (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Romans 6:3-5) in order to get into Christ (Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:26-27) because their sins have been washed away (Acts 22:16).
Don’t be a fool, obey God rather than man.
