Matthew 9:35–38 NIV
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

2. All need to hear about Jesus, the one who heals and saves. Matt 9:35

a. Jesus has gone throughout the entire area proclaiming good news and healing the sick

b. Jesus is the model we are to follow. We are to proclaim the Gospel and bring healing to a lost and dying world.

3. Jesus’ compassion on the masses was based on their primary need not being met. Matt 9:36-38

a. Those tasked with leading the people have failed to provide for their spiritual needs. Now they are sheep without a shepherd. Matt 9:36

i. Jesus has met their physical needs, but his compassion is not just on physical suffering. The greater need is spiritual.
ii. Joshua replaced Moses so that the people would not be like sheep without a shepherd. Num 27:17

b. Jesus tells us that the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few so we must pray for laborers. Matt 9:37-38

a. What is the Lord asking of you tonight?
