ILLUST: Multi-tool uses
What you use depends on what you need
READ John 14: 16 and following

The Holy Spirit

Each of the aspects a study of its own…lots of references this morning...

1) The Nature of the Spirit

Third person of the Triune God - 2 Cor 13:14
2 Corinthians 13:14 NASB95
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
Other places - in Acts 5 we see the Holy Spirit being lied to and God being lied to…
Spirit of Christ = Holy Spirit
Way back to Creation, see Genesis 1:2
Genesis 1:2 NASB95
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
The Gift of God - Acts 10:45
Acts 10:45 NASB95
All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
OVERALL - the Helper - John 14:16
John 14:16 NASB95
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
Don’t miss this subtlety - “another Helper”
Jesus was given to HELP - by saving!
He sent the Helper, to then live the “saved” life
Nature of the Spirit - can’t see Him physically, likened to the wind…

2) The “Role” of the Spirit

What He’s Done, Does, will continue to do
His past and present action - His “role” if you will
This is a LONG (partial) list - here we go
INSPIRES - Start with the Word - HS inspired - 2 Peter 1:21
2 Peter 1:21 NASB95
for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
REGENERATES - Rom 8:11
Romans 8:11 NASB95
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
TEACHES - John 14:26
John 14:26 NASB95
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
DWELLS INSIDE - 1 John 2:27
1 John 2:27 NASB95
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
PRODUCES FRUIT - Galatians 5 - (fruit of the Spirit list)
GiFTS US TO USE TALENTS FOR GOD’S GLORY - 1 Cor 12:4
1 Corinthians 12:4 NASB95
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
(Separate teaching on “tongues,” “healing”
CONVICTS OF SIN - John 16:8
John 16:8 NASB95
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
GIVES WISDOM - 1 Cor 2:10
1 Corinthians 2:10 NASB95
For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
SEALS SALVATION - Eph 1:13
Ephesians 1:13 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
SETS US APART - Sanctification is the work of the Spirit

3) Our “Role” As Believers

First - become a believer, you receive the HS - Eph 1:13 again…
Ephesians 1:13 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
Yield to the drawing of the HS to repent and give your life to Christ, living for Him - Gal 5:16
Galatians 5:16 NASB95
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
QUESTION - How do you know you are saved? Really?
1 John 5:13 makes it clear you CAN know
But, besides head knowledge
The work of the Holy Spirit
The mark of the believer
The identifying characteristics
Besides looking the part, saying the part, YOU THINK IT
YOUR MIND IS BEING RENEWED by the Holy Spirit - Romans 12:2
Romans 12:2 NASB95
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Second, Consider:
What we do WITH the Spirit Guiding, Helping
Jesus, in Acts 1:8, said we would be His witnesses
In Matthew 28 He says He give us the power, and is with us
Last bit of God’s Word, after all the judgement, wrath, new heaven and earth are discussed, promised and warned against…
Revelation 22:17 NASB95
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
The Holy Spirit guides in truth
The believer speaks the truth in love
But look at the verse…
…HE HELPS US!
Our witness will only be effective if we look to Him for Help
Spirit AND the bride do the inviting
Then when the sinner repents
HS regenerates
And angels rejoice!
Struggling with your witness?
Maybe you need to allow the Spirit to help you
Boldness, courage…
Relax, let your heart pound a little, and He’ll give you the Words - Luke 12:12
Luke 12:12 NASB95
for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Then let the Spirit work
MOST IMPORTANT:
Why do we warn kids, tell them not to do stuff?
Because the potential is there
Believers need to be warned of a very serious and dangerous potential
Ephesians 4:30 NASB95
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Acts 7:51 NASB95
“You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
CHOICE - believers can resist, can grieve the Spirit
He’d not have warned us if it were not true
1 Thessalonians 5:19 NASB95
Do not quench the Spirit;
“Quench” - to put out, cool, turn off
Each aspect of what the HS does
Producing fruit, using talents, convicting of sin, wisdom, being set apart, being taught…
These can be resisted, grieved, quenched
I can ignore the perfect tool on my belt…
(LIST of ways we can quench the Spirit)
Believers - it is very REAL to struggle
It takes the DAILY walk in the Spirit to grow, to keep growing
Choices get better, walk gets stronger
Then, temptation, a slip, a stumble
1 Corinthians 10:12 NASB95
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
Never, ever, ever, lose sight of the fact that your power to live for Christ is rooted in the Holy Spirit in you.
OPTIONS:
Try it on your own? Struggle you cannot overcome
Let the Spirit help you?
You’ll feel the struggle, and experience the joy of seeing the One Who overcomes the world, do just that.
