Psalm 119:133 KJV 1900

Introduction: The Age of Wandering

We live in a time of great uncertainty. People wander emotionally, mentally, spiritually—even geographically—looking for something to anchor them. They wander in and out of churches, in and out of relationships, in and out of identity, purpose, and calling. They are restless, unsure, and easily swayed.
But at the heart of every wandering soul is the loss of one thing: wonder.
When we lose our awe of God, our reverence for His presence, our hunger for His Word—we become spiritually directionless.
The solution to wandering is not just information or even religious practice. The solution is to recover the wonder of who God is.
Because wonder leads to worship, worship leads to wisdom, and wisdom brings direction.

I. The Condition of a Wandering Generation

Proverbs 14:12 KJV 1900
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
• Society says, “Follow your heart,” but the Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9).
• This generation has more access to knowledge than ever before, but less anchored truth.
• Wandering happens when people are guided by feelings instead of the fear of the Lord.
Psalm 95:10
Psalm 95:10 KJV 1900
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, And said, It is a people that do err in their heart, And they have not known my ways:
Israel wandered in the wilderness not because of distance, but because of disconnect—they saw God’s works but never understood His ways.

II. What Happens When We Lose Wonder

Romans 1:21 KJV 1900
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
• When you lose awe, you lose clarity.
• When you lose reverence, you lose direction.
• When you lose gratitude, your heart becomes dark.
Wonder reminds us of how small we are and how mighty God is. It humbles us and lifts Him up. It opens the way for divine clarity.

III. Restoring Wonder Leads to Direction

Psalm 119:133 KJV 1900
133 Order my steps in thy word: And let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
This is the prayer of a person who has found wonder again.
“Order my steps” = set my life in divine rhythm.
“In thy word” = let truth be my compass.
“Let not iniquity have dominion” = don’t let sin confuse or rule me.
When the Word becomes the authority, direction follows.

IV. God’s Guidance Brings Stability

Isaiah 33:6 KJV 1900
6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be The stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: The fear of the Lord is his treasure.
• People don’t need more options—they need stability.
• That stability comes from wisdom, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord.
The fear of the Lord is the very essence of wonder—it is holy reverence.
When you’re filled with the wonder of who God is:
• You stop wandering after the world.
• You stop being pulled by every opinion.
• You find peace in His presence and purpose in His will.

V. From Wanderer to Worshiper

Luke 15:17-20 (KJV) – The Prodigal Son “And when he came to himself…”
• He wandered far, but when he remembered his father, wonder returned.
• He came back to what he once took for granted.
• His return brought restoration.
Some of us need to come back—not just physically, but spiritually—to the place of awe and honor for the presence of God.

VI. How to Recover Wonder and Find Direction

1. Return to the Word of God
Psalm 119:105 (KJV)“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
The Word doesn’t show you the whole path—just the next step.
2. Seek His Presence Daily
Exodus 33:15 (KJV)“If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.”
Direction comes through relationship, not religion.
3. Remove the Distractions
Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)“Let us lay aside every weight…”
Wandering often happens when we’re overloaded or overstimulated.
4. Reignite the Fire of Worship
Psalm 27:4 (KJV)“One thing have I desired of the LORD…”
Wonder lives where worship thrives.

Conclusion: Wonder Reconnects Us to Divine Direction

When you’re filled with the wonder of God:
• Confusion becomes clarity
• Wandering becomes walking in step
• Doubt gives way to devotion
• You stop asking “What’s next?” and start declaring “Order my steps, O Lord!”
If you’ve been wandering—emotionally, spiritually, or mentally—it’s time to stop and look up.
Let the wonder of who He is flood your heart again.
Let the Word guide your steps. Let worship renew your mind. Let the fear of the Lord bring stability to your life.
Come back to the wonder—and you’ll find your way.
Psalm 143:10 KJV 1900
10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: Thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
A.W. Tozer once said:
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. Worship is pure or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God.”
Let us be a people who never lose our wonder—and never lose our way.
