Series - Understanding the Life and Ministry of Jesus, Part 7
Part 7 - His Resurrection
Text - Matthew 28.1-9
Matthew 28:1–9 NASB 2020
1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb. 2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone, and sat upon it. 3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 The guards shook from fear of him and became like dead men. 5 And the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see Him; behold, I have told you.” 8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to report to His disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Rejoice!” And they came up and took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.
John 20:19–20 NASB 2020
19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were together due to fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, “Peace be to you.” 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Background

Main Idea

Main Points

the significance of Christ’s resurrection
the significance of Christ’s post-resurrection appearances
the significance of Christ’s ascension

The significance of Christ’s resurrection

It happened on the first day of the week

Matthew 28:1 NASB 2020
1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb.
Mark 16:1–2 NASB 2020
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
Luke 24:1–3 NASB 2020
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
John 20:1 NASB 2020
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already removed from the tomb.

Debate 1: did Jesus fulfill exactly 72 hours in the grave?

Their basis - Matthew 12.40
Matthew 12:40 NASB 2020
40 for just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
some Bible scholars insist that this is the exact time Jesus spent in the grave,
Refutation
this is the only text with this statement (3 days and 3 nights)
there are more references that say otherwise
“on the third day” - Matthew 16.21
Matthew 16:21 NASB 2020
21 From that time Jesus began to point out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day.
Matthew 17:23 “23 and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.”
Matthew 20:19 “19 and they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on the third day He will be raised up.””
Matthew 27.64 “64 Therefore, give orders for the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.””
Acts 10:40 NASB 2020
40 God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He be revealed,
1 Corinthians 15:4 “4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”
“in three days” - John 2.19
John 2:19 NASB 2020
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Matthew 26:61 “61 and said, “This man stated, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’ ””
the account of the Gospel writers from the triumphal entry to the crucifixion is clearly laid out
they cannot force the Scripture to say Jesus died on Wednesday or Thursday in order to make it exactly 72 hours
ALL THE SCRIPTURE CONFIRM THAT THE “3 DAYS And 3 NIGHTS” BEGAN WHEN JESUS DIED FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD IN THE EARLY HOURS OF SUNDAY MORNING!

Debate 2: did Jesus rise from the dead on Sunday or on Saturday?

Argument - Jesus died on Wednesday afternoon and rose from the dead on Saturday afternoon!
Refutation
the passion week is clearly laid out in the Scriptures
there is no prophetic significance for a Saturday resurrection
there is great significance in a Sunday resurrection
Jesus was raised from the dead on the same day the firstfruits are waved before God - Lev 23.10-11
Leviticus 23:10–11 NASB 2020
10 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land which I am going to give to you and you gather its harvest, then you shall bring in the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. 11 He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord for you to be accepted; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.
the day after the sabbath was the first day of the week
Jesus is the first fruits - 1 Cor 15.20-23
1 Corinthians 15:20–23 NASB 2020
20 But the fact is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 21 For since by a man death came, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
Sunday resurrection signifies a “new beginning”
the resurrected Christ is the beginning of “new creation”
The same Word by which God created all things
The same Word/gospel calls things into existence
the 8th day signifies eternity - 7 days from Adam to the Millennium

Jesus’ body was glorified

God the Father gave Him glory - 1 Peter 1.20-21
1 Peter 1:20–21 NASB 2020
20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Jesus was “glorified” - Acts 3.13
Acts 3:13 NASB 2020
13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you handed over and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.

The purpose of Christ’s post-resurrection appearances

Bible records of Christ’s appearance after His resurrection
Mary Magdalene - Mark 16:9 “9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.”
Simon Peter - Luke 24:34 “34 saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!””
Cleopas and another disciple - Luke 24:13–15 “13 And behold, on that very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.”
The Eleven and others with them - John 20:19 “19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were together due to fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, “Peace be to you.””
The disciples, with Thomas - John 20:26 “26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be to you.””
Some disciples by the sea of Tiberias - John 21:1 “1 After these things Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way:”
the Eleven in Galilee - Matthew 28:16 “16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated to them.”
500 + brethren - 1 Corinthians 15:6 “6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep;”
James - 1 Corinthians 15:7 “7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;”
the Eleven in Bethany, 40 days after - Acts 1:4 “4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;”
THE RESURRECTED CHRIST WAS ATTESTED BY MANY WITNESSES.
Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances have multiple purposes - John 20.19-23
John 20:19–23 NASB 2020
19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were together due to fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, “Peace be to you.” 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be to you; just as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
first, to assure the disciples that He is alive and well
second, to make the disciples witnesses of the resurrected Christ
third, to commission the disciples to a ministry
fourth, to ensure that the disciples receive the promised Holy Spirit

To assure the disciples that He is alive and well

Jesus promised His disciples that He will rise up on the third day after He is killed by His enemies.
on resurrection day, angels announced that He is risen.
Jesus appeared to His disciples to confirm that He is alive
Luke 24:33–35 NASB 2020
33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, 34 saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!” 35 They began to relate their experiences on the road, and how He was recognized by them at the breaking of the bread.
Jesus appeared to Thomas - John 20.26-29
John 20:26–29 NASB 2020
26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be to you.” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Place your finger here, and see My hands; and take your hand and put it into My side; and do not continue in disbelief, but be a believer.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

To make His disciples witnesses of His resurrection

Jesus appeared to His disciples to make them His witnesses - Luke 24.45-48
Luke 24:45–48 NASB 2020
45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “So it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.
Peter and John - Acts 3.14-15
Acts 3:14–15 NASB 2020
14 But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.
Acts 4:20 NASB 2020
20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

To commission the disciples to the work of “making disciples”

Matthew 28:18–20 NASB 2020
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

To entrust the care of His flock to the disciples

John 21:18 NASB 2020
18 “Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.
The apostles were given the task of taking care of the people who will believe in Christ and become His followers.
It is serious task
It is a sacrificial task

To ensure the disciples receive the power they will need in this new ministry

Jesus instructed them to wait in Jerusalem - Luke 24.49
Luke 24:49 NASB 2020
49 And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Witnessing requires more than just being an “eyewitness” - they needed power for witnessing!
Acts 1:6–8 NASB 2020
6 So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 But He said to them, “It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which the Father has set by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.”
The Holy Spirit is the power for witnessing! - He is ALL YOU NEED!
ON THE DAY YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT, YOU HAVE BEEN EMPOWERED FOR WITNESSING FOR JESUS CHRIST!

The significance of Christ’s ascension

The Book of Acts records the actual “ascension” of Christ - Acts 1.9
Acts 1:9 NASB 2020
9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight.
Note - if Jesus was raised and glorified already on the first day of the week, why was there a need for His “ascension” 40 days later?
Up to this time Jesus was with His disciples - it was still part of His earthly ministry - John 16.20-22
John 16:20–22 NASB 2020
20 Truly, truly I say to you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy! 21 Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.
Christ’s ascension marks the end of His earthly ministry and the beginning of the Holy Spirit dispensation - John 16.7
John 16:7 NASB 2020
7 But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Conclusion

The resurrection ENSURES THE CONTINUATION OF THE MINISTRY OF JESUS CHRIST BEYOND THE GRAVE
the grave cannot stop the work of God
HIS RESURRECTION IS ITSELF CHRIST’S WORK - Romans 4.25
Romans 4:25 NASB 2020
25 He who was delivered over because of our wrongdoings, and was raised because of our justification.
Romans 5:1–2 NASB 2020
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we celebrate in hope of the glory of God.Romans 5.8-11
Romans 5:8–11 NASB 2020
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Hebrews 7:25 NASB 2020
25 Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Song - Jesus Paid It All
I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small,
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”
CHORUS
Jesus paid it all.
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain;
He washed it white as snow.
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots,
And melt the heart of stone.
Since nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim,
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.
