We do not know what he is talking about .” John 16:16-24 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly , truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. John 16:16-24 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. John 16:16-24 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. I. Understanding… a. SORROW is the UNEASINESS OR PAIN OF MIND which is produced by the loss of any good. or of frustrated hopes of good, or expected loss of happiness; to grieve; to be sad. I. Understanding… b. CONSOLIDATION is the CARE and ATTENTION given to new believers so that they develop the character of Christ. I. Understanding… c. CONSOLATION is the ENCOURAGEMENT and COMFORT given to someone in sorrow. II. Degrees of Sorrow Sorrow implies a sense of loss or a sense of guilt and remorse ( Kalungkutang dala ng pagkawala, panghihinayang, pagsisisi o konsensya) Grief implies poignant sorrow for an immediate cause (Pagdadalamhati dala ng kasalukuyang pangyayari) Anguish suggests torturing grief or dread (Pagdadalamhating may kasamang masidhing pag-aalala o takot) II. Degrees of Sorrow Woe is deep or inconsolable grief or misery (malalim na pagdadalamhati na halos hindi kayang maibsan ng pag-aliw) Regret implies pain caused by deep disappointment, fruitless longing, or unavailing remorse. (Kapaitang dulot ng malalim na pagkabigo o di pagkamtan) (from Merriam Webster Discussion of Synonyms) John 16:20 Truly , truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. III. The Sorrow of a Consolidator “You will weep and lament” (v.20a) – Consolidator’s weeping and lamenting are important process of discipleship. “But the world will rejoice” (v. 20a) – Consolidators and the world have different stimulator and motivator in weeping and rejoicing. III. The Sorrow of a Consolidator “You will be sorrowful” (v.20b) – Consolidators are sure to experience things that will grieve our spirit and make us cry. “But your sorrow will turn into joy” (v. 20b) – Consolidators sorrow has hope. John 16:21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world . IV. The Joyful Sorrow of A Consolidator Being in sorrow is like “when a woman is giving birth” (v.21a) – What are you giving birth? Being in sorrow is like your “hour has come” (v. 21b) – What are you conceiving? Are you conceiving to give birth? Or to abort? IV. The Joyful Sorrow of A Consolidator Sorrow becomes joy when “a human being has been born into the world.” (v.21c) – sorrow will be forgotten when there’s a new life delivered! V. The Unquenchable Joy of A Consolidator Unquenchable joy comes when we do not resist sorrow today - “ So also you have sorrow now” (v. 22a) b. Unquenchable joy comes when we experience God - “but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice and no one will take away your joy from you” (v. 22b) VI. The Complete Joy of A Consolidator a . Complete joy is possible on earth when we ask in prayer - “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (v. 23b-24) VI. The Complete Joy of A Consolidator b. Complete joy is given even when we do not ask Him - “In that day you will ask nothing of me.” (v. 23a) VII. Conclusion JESUS our GREAT CONSOLIDATOR experienced all horrors of sorrow when He died on the Cross but He consoled His first disciples in their sorrow through sending the Holy Spirit our GREAT COMFORTER. The Holy Spirit consolidates us and leads us to be Christ-like in faith, love, speech and action. VII. Conclusion You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another . John 15:16-17
