Setting the Stage
A FRAGMENTED WORLD
Broken Relationships
Broken between us and God Romans 3:23 Isaiah 59:2
2 But your iniquities are separating you from your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not listen.
23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
...with one another Genesis 4:8
8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.
Ask: "Are the things that truly unify us?"
Is it Where we live?…City, state or nation?
…Sports?
…Family?
…Gender?
I think it’s safe to say that there are relatively few things that humanity can stay united on.
...and with Creation Genesis 3:17-18
17 And he said to the man, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘Do not eat from it’: The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
20 For the creation was subjected to futility—not willingly, but because of him who subjected it—in the hope 21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now.
There is only one Person capable of uniting us: GOD
and it is BECAUSE He Himself is PERFECTLY United.
Introduce Ephesians 4:5-6 as a powerful declaration of unity rooted in one Lord.
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
Introduce the lyrics as a modern expression of the same truth, highlighting the majestic singularity of God.
"One voice in the dark, A song that lights up the stars" (God's creative and redemptive power)
"One breath that gives life, One sovereign in power Who speaks with thunder and fire" (God's absolute authority)
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”
7 Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
VIDEO Summary - Voddie Baucham
16 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud blast from a trumpet, so that all the people in the camp shuddered.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
2. One Lord: The Foundation of Our Faith (Ephesians 4:5a)
Ephesians 4:5 (CSB)
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
The Trinity
The Trinity is the basis of the gospel, and the gospel is a declaration of the Trinity in action.
J. I. Packer
16 When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.”
Here we see God the Father speaking, the Son being baptized and the Holy Spirit descending like a Dove. This shows the 3 persons of the Godhead, but acting as one.
9 For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
This shows that the Son and the Father are both God
6 yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.
The implications of this:
Submission, obedience, and worship.
1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
3 One God and Father: The Source of Our Unity (Ephesians 4:6)
6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
What does that look like?
9 “Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy.
He is HOLY
15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”
1 See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him.
He is our Father once we receive the Spirit and have been adopted.
And who is He the God of?
29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
• Discuss how this truth transcends cultural and denominational barriers.
• Emphasize the importance of unity in the body of Christ.
4. Living Out the Unity
• Challenge the congregation to:
Acknowledge Jesus as Lord in every area of their lives, including how we view Scripture
Reflect unity within our families, the church and the world around us.
